At 8:05 PM EDT on September 22, the sun will be directly over the equator, marking the 2026 September Equinox. (In theory, the day and night should be of equal length on that day; in practice, because sunrise and sunset are defined by the Sun’s upper edge (not its center) crossing the horizon, and atmospheric refraction bends sunlight upward, this will not happen a few days after the date of the equinox.)
