Okanagan – Kids for Inquiry: Ornithologist

I know it’s 9am on a Sunday morning! But the birds will be busy at that time of day, so it’s a good time to go watch them.

We will meet at the entrance to the Rotary Marsh Bird Sanctuary on Sunset Drive, downtown Kelowna. We will be joined by experts from the Central Okanagan Naturalists Club and the Young Naturalists to look for birds and try to identify some of them. Kids should bring cameras and/or binoculars, if they have them. Sketch books might be nice for kids who like to draw.

This event is designed for kids between 6 and 12 years old. Parents should stay with younger children. Older children may be dropped off, but parents are welcome to stay.

At 10am, we will walk over the the Rotary Centre to dissect owl pellets! Can you find evidence of what owls eat by investigating one of their regurgitated pellets?

Kids need to bring rubber gloves and tweezers, paper/notebooks and pencils. Magnifying glasses would be great too! If they bring plain paper and they have a camera, they can take nice photos of the bones they find in the pellets.
