CFIC T.O. – Science & Philosophy Book Club – “Time Reborn: From the Crisis in Physics to the Future of the Universe” by Lee Smolin
This group is hosted by CFI Canada members Christine Gagnon and Vlad Bunea at our National Headquarters, 55 Eglinton Ave E., Suite 307, Buzzer Code 49, from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. Suggested donation is $5. There is an after-event at a location near the office.
The goal is to provide a friendly, free-thinking environment in which to discuss books that inspire rewarding conversation on subjects related to science and philosophy.
The fact that time is real may seem obvious. You experience it passing every day when you watch clocks tick, bread toast, and children grow. But most physicists see things differently, from Newton to Einstein to today’s quantum theorists. For them, time isn’t real. You may think you experience time passing, but they say it’s just an illusion.
What if the laws of physics themselves were not timeless? What if they could evolve? Time Reborn: From the Crisis in Physics to the Future of the Universe offers a radical new approach to cosmology that embraces the reality of time and opens up a whole new universe of possibilities. There are few ideas that, like our notion of time, shape our thinking about literally everything, with major implications for physics and beyond—from climate change to the economic crisis.
Smolin explains in lively and lucid prose how the true nature of time impacts our world.
Lee Smolin is tentatively scheduled to do a speaking event at CFIC Toronto Branch in 2015. When details are finalized, the event will be posted.
