Last month we asked you about your sport viewing habits in light of the announcement of a merger between the PGA and LIV golf, owned by investors from Saudi Arabia.
The majority of our poll respondents indicated that they would boycott a sport where its ownership was know as a flagrant abuser of human rights. Some don’t watch sports, whether run by ethical groups or not. Just two of our respondents indicated that they would watch for the entertainment value, regardless of the sponsorship. Other respondents were concerned about a) what they felt were excessive amounts paid to athletes, b) the ruthlessness of professional sports, and c) government involvement in amateur sports.
We also asked you about what other reasons you might have for boycotting sports. We heard that you would give up sports if you had concerns about their environmental impact. Two of you mentioned concerns over gambling. Others worried that the ownership or sponsorship of teams by “bad corporate citizens“ would be a deterrent.
Thanks to all who took part in our July poll.
