Biological diversity, sex and gender diversity, mental health, peacekeeping, and more

May the 4th be with you on Star Wars Day.

May ?: A piece of space junk, originally part of a Soviet probe destined for Venus, will crash to earth sometime around May 10. According to space scientists, “The risks involved are not particularly high, but not zero.”

May 5-11 is Mental Health Week.  2025’s theme is “Unmasking Mental Health”.

May 17 is International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia, marking 35 years since homosexuality was declassified as a “mental disorder” by the WHO.

May 22nd is the International Day for Biological Diversity. This year’s theme is Harmony with nature and sustainable development.

May 25 is Geek Pride Day.

May 29 is International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers. This year’s theme examines the future of UN Peacekeeping.

100 years ago, in May 1925:

High school teacher John Scopes is arrested, and charged with teaching the theory of evolution.

The last naturally occurring, non-radioactive element, Rhenium, was (re-)discovered, and classified by Walter Noddack, Ida Tacke and Otto Berg.
