Posted on May 25, 2023May 31, 2023 By Critical Links

June is National Indigenous History Month.

June 3 is World Bicycle Day.

June 4 is Hug Your Cat Day.

June 8, 1625, marks the birthday of Giovanni Cassini, who first discovered seven moons of Saturn (today we know of 124!).

June 10 is World Wide Knit in Public Day.

June 14 is World Blood Donor Day.

June 21 is National Aboriginal Day.

June 21 is also the Solstice, the day on which the sun rises farthest north on the horizon — and is highest in the sky at local noon.

June 21 is also World Humanist Day.

June 23 is National Day of Remembrance for Victims of Terrorism.

June 23 is also the 111th anniversary of the birth of British mathematician and logician Alan Turing (and June 7 is the 59th anniversary of his premature death). Turing made major contributions to mathematics, cryptanalysis, logic, philosophy, and mathematical biology.

June 9, 1781, was the birthday of George Stephenson, inventor of the first practical steam locomotive engine.

On June 14, 1927, George Washington Carver received a patent for a process of producing paints and stains.

June 16, 1902, was the birthday of Nobel Laureate biologist Barbara McClintock, American cytogeneticist, who lead in the development of maize cytogenetics.

On June 17, 1980, Atari’s “Asteroids” and “Lunar Lander” were the first two video games to be copyright registered.

On June 27, 1880, Helen Keller became the first deaf and blind person to earn a bachelor of arts degree.

June 30 is World Asteroid Day (or perhaps it should be called Out–Of–This-World Asteroid Day).

If you celebrate any of these, or have suggestions for upcoming celebrations or observances, please drop us a line or send a picture to CriticalLinks@centreforinquiry.ca.
