Author talk: Democracy, Deity, and Death

Dr Qais Ghanem
Dr Qais Ghanem

Dr Qais Ghanem discussed his recent book, Democracy, Deity, and Death. The novel describes a series of discussions among 4 Arabs, with completely different religious backgrounds and beliefs, who meet regularly at a London café. The fictional participants include a young devout Muslim from Yemen, a middle-aged gay Lebanese Christian, a retired secular Egyptian Professor of Biology with a German education, and a middle-aged Egyptian bank manager who has discarded all her Islamic traditions and beliefs.

Dr Ghanem spoke about his book and we had a Q+A and discussion. Copies of the book were available for purchase at the event.

About the Author:
Dr. Qais Ghanem is a recently retired associate professor of medicine at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Ottawa. A graduate of the University of Edinburgh, he immigrated to Canada in 1970. Dr Ghanem is the winner of four national awards, creator of the Ottawa CHIN Radio talk show Dialogue with Diversity, and author of several books of prose and poetry.
