September 8 is International Literacy Day. This year’s theme is: “Promoting multilingual education: Literacy for mutual understanding and peace.” (September 8 is also Ampersand Day and Star Trek Day.)

September 12 is Programmers Day, celebrated on the 256th (or 28th) day of the year.

The UN has designated September 21 the International Day of Peace, declaring that the pursuit of peace is a fundamental human right.

The September equinox is at 12:44 UTC on September 22, 2024.

September 22 to 28 is Gender Equality Week.

September 30 is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, also known as “Orange Shirt Day.” 

September births, deaths, events, and inventions:

Sharon Christa Corrigan (Christa McCauliffe) was born on September 2, 1948. The first civilian aboard a space shuttle, she tragically died when the Challenger exploded shortly after launch.

In the early days of the NASA space program, “Computers” were human mathematicians (often women) who did calculations with pencil and paper and sliderules. One of those was Dorothy Jean Johnson Vaughan, born September 20, 1910.

George Eastman patented the roll film camera for Kodak on September 4, 1888, but it took another 42 years until Johannes Ostermeier was issued a patent for the flash bulb, in 1930.
