May 2026 Dates of Interest

Posted on May 1, 2026April 30, 2026 By Critical Links No Comments on May 2026 Dates of Interest

May 1 (“May Day”) is International Workers’ Day.

May 1 is also International Tuba Day (Everyone knows that the best thing to use to fix string instruments is Cello Tape. But what do you use for brass instruments? How about a Tuba Glue?)

Want more puns? May the Fourth be with you on Star Wars Day!

May 15 is the UN’s International Day of Families.

May 16 is the UN’s International Day of Living Together in Peace.

May 17 is the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia (IDAHOBIT).

May 17 is also the UN’s World Telecommunication and Information Society Day. This year’s campaign asks: “What if?”, exploring the digital systems that quietly support daily life — and what it takes to keep them strong, secure and reliable.

100 years ago:

  • David Attenborough, broadcaster, natural historian and writer, was born on May 8, 1926
  • On May 4 and 5 1926, there was a failed attempt to launch Robert Goddard’s second liquid-propellant rocket (a modification of the design used for the previous successful launch on 16 March). Of course, failures can advance science and technology as much (if not more) than successes, and the rest, as they say, is history.
