October 1 is National Seniors Day

October is Women’s History Month – an opportunity to reflect on the work still ahead to remove barriers so everyone can participate fully in Canada’s social, cultural, and economic life. 

October 11 is the UN’s International Day of the Girl Child, and October 18, Persons Day, commemorates the day in 1929 when Canadian women were first included in the legal definition of “persons”.

October 6 is UNESCO’s International Geodiversity Day

October 16 is World Food Day

October 24-31 is UN’s Global Media and Information Literacy Week 

50 years ago:

October 2: ENIAC, the world’s first programmable, electronic, general-purpose digital computer, was decommissioned after 10 years of service

100 years ago:

October 24: Birth of NASA scientist Emmett Chapelle

October 31: Birth of quantum chemist and Nobel Laureate John Pople
