One Public Education Now: The Fight Continues

Posted on July 28, 2022August 1, 2022 By Critical Links 1 Comment on One Public Education Now: The Fight Continues

OPEN (One Public Education Now) has raised $150,000 for the legal challenge to the current public funding of Ontario separate schools, which we have paid to our lawyers and expert witness. But now we need to raise another $200,000.

The case conference has been rescheduled for September 26, and the Attorney-General has scheduled a motion to strike for November 15. We don’t think the motion will be successful, but of course opposing it will take additional funds. Contributions can be made by e-transfer to open@cripeweb.org, or through our website.

I fervently believe in this goal but am extremely dubious of a legal remedy under the current constitutional framework. In fact, I sadly predict that only the lawyers will benefit from this campaign. It seems far more likely there will be further fragmenting of the Ontario school system, as more religions seek parity with Catholicism.
(I’m only being empirical here, not normative .) However, I remain hopeful if not optimistic.
