In a world increasingly influenced by misinformation and polarized viewpoints, the need for communities grounded in science, reason, and secular values has never been more pressing. Across Canada, many cities lack a dedicated space where individuals can come together to promote critical thinking and evidence-based discussions. This gap presents both a challenge and an opportunity for those passionate about fostering rational discourse.
I’m John Lombard, a member of the National Board of Directors for CFIC and the Director of CFIC’s Vancouver Branch. I’ve recently taken on a new role: mentoring volunteers who want to start CFIC chapters in cities across the country. My vision is simple but powerful: a network of vibrant, local CFIC communities that serve as welcoming hubs for inquiry, dialogue, and action. Whether it’s hosting public talks, organizing science-based events, or simply creating a space where skeptics and secular humanists can connect, each new chapter becomes a vital part of a nationwide movement.
Starting something new might sound intimidating—but you’re not alone. I’m here to provide the support and tools you’ll need to succeed.
Here’s how I’ll help:
- Step-by-step guidance on how to launch your chapter, including planning, organizing, and gaining official CFIC recognition.
- Access to CFIC resources, from templates and promotional materials to speaker lists and event ideas.
- Ongoing mentorship, including regular check-ins to troubleshoot, celebrate progress, and build your local leadership confidence.
- Community-building strategies to help you grow membership, create inclusive events, and strengthen your chapter over time.
Why Me?
I bring more than 25 years of experience in leadership, intercultural communication, and critical thinking advocacy. I’ve worked across Asia and North America as a consultant, business coach, and educator—helping organizations like Lenovo, Siemens, and P&G navigate complex cross-cultural challenges. I’ve also led initiatives to foster community and public speaking skills, including serving as Founder and President of the first Toastmasters club in Beijing, where I helped guide and mentor the expansion of many additional groups throughout China.
In Canada, I’ve extended that commitment to community leadership through board roles with The Clergy Project and Big Brothers & Big Sisters Langley, alongside my ongoing work with CFIC. From launching new organizations to coaching future leaders, I understand how to turn a great idea into a lasting legacy.
Why You?
Because you care. Because you want your community to have more voices for science, reason, and compassion. Because you see the need—and you’re ready to act.
Starting a CFIC chapter isn’t just about holding events. It’s about igniting a movement in your city. As a chapter leader, you could:
- Host public discussions on topics that matter—from climate change and artificial intelligence to medical misinformation and secular ethics.
- Collaborate with educators, scientists, and activists to bring critical thinking into classrooms and public spaces.
- Create safe, welcoming communities for people who may feel isolated for questioning religious dogma or pseudoscience.
- Support human rights by advocating for secularism, refugee inclusion, and policies based on evidence, not ideology.
- Innovate new ways to engage, whether that’s through meetups, workshops, film screenings, or partnerships with local organizations.
You don’t need a degree in philosophy or science. You need heart, vision, and a desire to make a difference. The rest? I’ll help you get there.
