After some fleeting good news, we are shocked to tell you that we continue to wait. According to Omer, he is one of 70 refugees in Nepal who are headed to Canada. Nepal currently does not recognize these individuals as refugees and has imposed “overstay” fees on them. The United Nations is challenging this. However, Nepal is in the midst of an election and the Office of the Home Minister is vacant. This has created a situation in which there is no one with whom to negotiate.
The refugees’ visas and medical clearances have lapsed. The Government of Canada assures them that these will be reinstated as soon as the overstay issue has been resolved.
The election is scheduled for April 23, 2023. We will continue to keep you informed.
