SUMMARY:CFIC T.O.: Science & Philosophy Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by CFI Canada member Christine Gagnon\, the goal is to provide a friendly\, free-thinking environment in which to discuss books that inspire rewarding conversation on subjects related to science and philosophy. \nSuggested donation is $5. \nTHIS MONTH’S BOOK SELECTION: \nFinding Zero: A Mathematician’s Odyssey to Uncover the Origins of Numbers by Amir D. Aczel \nThe invention of numerals is perhaps the greatest abstraction the human mind has ever created. Virtually everything in our lives is digital\, numerical\, or quantified. The story of how and where we got these numerals\, which we so depend on\, has for thousands of years been shrouded in mystery. Finding Zero is an adventure filled saga of Amir Aczel’s lifelong obsession: to find the original sources of our numerals. Aczel has doggedly crisscrossed the ancient world\, scouring dusty\, moldy texts\, cross examining so-called scholars who offered wildly differing sets of facts\, and ultimately penetrating deep into a Cambodian jungle to find a definitive proof. Here\, he takes the reader along for the ride. \nThe history begins with the early Babylonian cuneiform numbers\, followed by the later Greek and Roman letter numerals. Then Aczel asks the key question: where do the numbers we use today\, the so-called Hindu-Arabic numerals\, come from? It is this search that leads him to explore uncharted territory\, to go on a grand quest into India\, Thailand\, Laos\, Vietnam\, and ultimately into the wilds of Cambodia. There he is blown away to find the earliest zero—the keystone of our entire system of numbers—on a crumbling\, vine-covered wall of a seventh-century temple adorned with eaten-away erotic sculptures. While on this odyssey\, Aczel meets a host of fascinating characters: academics in search of truth\, jungle trekkers looking for adventure\, surprisingly honest politicians\, shameless smugglers\, and treacherous archaeological thieves—who finally reveal where our numbers come from. (goodreads.com) \n \n

SUMMARY:A Talk by Gary Bauslaugh - Assisted Death in Canada - What Went Wrong
DESCRIPTION:View this event on Meetup. \nGary Bauslaugh is the author of three books related to assisted death in Canada; his most recent (The Right to Die\, April 2016) tells the stories of the courageous Canadians\, from the 1940s to the present\, whose often heroic actions helped create a climate of acceptance of the idea that assisted death should be legalized in Canada. \nThe Supreme Court of Canada’s historic ruling in February\, 2015\, declared the law prohibiting assisted death unconstitutional\, and provided guidelines for new legislation which would be in tune with our Charter of Rights and Freedoms. \nThen it was up to the politicians to pass actual legislation\, an exercise that many of whom have been advocates for progressive reform on assisted dying looked forward to with great hope and anticipation. \nThe results\, however\, were problematic. Bauslaugh spoke out against the proposed legislation and on May 6 was called to Ottawa to speak on the matter to the House of Commons Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights. His views were reflected in the Senate’s initial rejection of the legislation. \nStill\, the flawed Bill was passed in June – a negation of the efforts of many Canadians\, over many years\, to protect the right of grievously ill and suffering Canadians to have a dignified and peaceful death. \nIn his talk Bauslaugh discusses how and why this happened and looks at where we go from here. \nGary Bauslaugh is a Victoria writer who has served as President of the Humanist Association of Canada and on the board of CFI Canada. He was Editor of Humanist Perspectives for five years. Recent books include The Right to Die – the courageous Canadians who gave us the right to a dignified death; Robert Latimer\, a story of justice and mercy; and The Secret Power of Juries. (All published by James Lorimer and Co.\, Toronto). \nTickets will be sold at the door. This event is free for CFI and MRU Secular Humanists members (with card) and $10 for the general public.
