SUMMARY:Catherine Dunphy at CFIC T.O.
DESCRIPTION:CFI Canada happily welcomes Catherine Dunphy to our National Office (55 Eglinton Ave E\, Suite 307) on Wednesday\, September 16th at 7:30pm to read from her book From Apostle to Apostate: The Story of the Clergy Project.  It was published by New Atheist publishers\, Pitchstone Publishing\, in July of this year. \nCopies of the book will be on offer and Ms. Dunphy will do a signing. If you’d like to reserve a copy\, please go to CFIC Events Page and select a member/non-member option to pay ($15 CFIC members/$20 non-members). \nFor admission\, it is: \n– FREE for CFI Canada members (present your membership card at the door) \n– $5.00 for non-members (get a ticket at CFIC Events Page or at the door) \n(There are a limited number of seats available and you may have to stand if you arrive just before 7:30pm) \nSo…what happens when your entire life and career are constructed around a religious faith that you no longer possess? Catherine will tell us with a firsthand account. \nFrom Apostle to Apostate offers a comprehensive introduction to the Clergy Project\, established in 2011 to provide a safe space where clergy who have lost their faith can connect with others facing the exact same questions—often alone and in isolation. Catherine movingly demonstrates\, despite the substantial personal and professional challenges non-believing clergy face\, for many\, a loss of faith has turned out not to be a loss at all—but a gain of newfound community\, self-respect\, and honesty with themselves and others. \nCatherine Dunphy is a founding member and former executive director of the Clergy Project. She is the operations manager for Rational Doubt\, a blog where members of the Clergy Project connect with the public.  She was trained as a Roman Catholic Chaplain and she lives in ol’ T.O. \n

SUMMARY:CFIC T.O. - Science & Philosophy Book Club - "Why Does the World Exist? An Existential Detective Story" by Jim Holt
DESCRIPTION:This is one of CFI Canada‘s most popular monthly events\, and that is mainly because of its two book-loving hosts\, CFI Canada members Christine Gagnon and Vlad Bunea. Come on out and enjoy the discussion. \nIt takes place at our National Headquarters\, 55 Eglinton Ave E.\, Suite 307\, from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. Suggested donation is $5. There is also an after-event at a location near the office and everyone is invited. \nThe goal is to provide a friendly\, free-thinking environment in which to discuss books that inspire rewarding conversation on subjects related to science and philosophy. \n \n“Why is there a world rather than nothing at all?” remains the darkest and most enduring of all metaphysical mysteries. Following in the footsteps of Lawrence Krauss\, Christopher Hitchens\, Roger Penrose\, and even Stephen Hawking\, Jim Holt\, an American philosopher\, author and essayist\, now enters this fractious debate with his lively and deeply informed narrative that traces the latest efforts to grasp the origins of the universe. \nThe slyly humorous Holt takes on the role of cosmological detective\, suggesting that we might have been too narrow in limiting our suspects to Yahweh vs. the Big Bang. Tracking down an eccentric Oxford philosopher\, a Physics Nobel Laureate\, a French Buddhist monk who lived with the Dalai Lama\, and John Updike just before he died\, Holt pursues unexplored angles to this cosmic puzzle. \nAs he pieces together a solution–one that sheds new light on the question of God and the meaning of existence–he offers brisk philosophical asides on time and eternity\, consciousness\, and the arithmetic of nothingness.
