SUMMARY:Okanagan - Documentary screening: We Were Children
DESCRIPTION:  \nScreening of the 2012 documentary\, We Were Children\, about the residential school system in Canada. \nIn collaboration with Interdisciplinary Studies at Okanagan College. \nThis event is free. Room B112. \n“In this feature film\, the profound impact of the Canadian government’s residential school system is conveyed through the eyes of two children who were forced to face hardships beyond their years. As young children\, Lyna and Glen were taken from their homes and placed in church-run boarding schools\, where they suffered years of physical\, sexual and emotional abuse\, the effects of which persist in their adult lives. We Were Children gives voice to a national tragedy and demonstrates the incredible resilience of the human spirit.” \nhttp://www.nfb.ca/film/we_were_children/trailer/we_were_children_trailer \nWe are pleased to announce that we have lined up a great panel to answer your questions after the screening of this documentary. Alma Marten\, who is a survivor of the residential schools will be joining us\, along with William Cohen\, professor of Indigenous Studies at Okanagan College\, and Anthony Isaac\, Aboriginal Access and Services Coordinator at Okanagan College.

SUMMARY:Okanagan - What We Are Really and the NeoDarwinian Renaissance
DESCRIPTION:  \nDinner at 5:30pm. Presentation starts at 7pm. \nLocal naturalist\, Jorma Jykkanen (BSc Zoology\, PDP)\, will be giving us a whirlwind tour from the science of the Big Bang\, through the origins of life\, and history of evolution to the present day. He recommends the following site for background on evolution: http://evolution.berkeley.edu/ \nJorma says he began his naturalist life as a boy in grade 6 studying stuffed birds behind a glass case at Rockwood Schooll\, Winnipeg. He went on into falconry and later went to university to study nature. He is a UBC trained Zoologist having studied evolution\, comparative anatomy of the vertebrates and entomology under Dr. Scudder at UBC. He also obtained a PDP from SFU with a focus in Environmental Education. Since then\, he has had various consulting and occasional teaching jobs\, and also worked as a salmon hatchery manager for a while. SUMMARY:CFIC T.O. – Science & Philosophy Book Club – “Thinking\, Fast and Slow” by Daniel Kahneman
DESCRIPTION:This group is hosted by CFI Canada members Christine Gagnon and Vlad Bunea at our National Headquarters\, 55 Eglinton Ave E.\, Suite 307\, Buzzer Code 49\, from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. Suggested donation is $5. There is an after-event at a location near the office. \nThe goal is to provide a friendly\, free-thinking environment in which to discuss books that inspire rewarding conversation on subjects related to science and philosophy \n \nIn the highly anticipated Thinking\, Fast and Slow\, Kahneman takes us on a groundbreaking tour of the mind and explains the two systems that drive the way we think. System 1 is fast\, intuitive\, and emotional; System 2 is slower\, more deliberative\, and more logical. The author exposes the extraordinary capabilities—and also the faults and biases—of fast thinking\, and reveals the pervasive influence of intuitive impressions on our thoughts and behavior. \nThe impact of loss aversion and overconfidence on corporate strategies\, the difficulties of predicting what will make us happy in the future\, the challenges of properly framing risks at work and at home\, the profound effect of cognitive biases on everything from playing the stock market to planning the next vacation—each of these can be understood only by knowing how the two systems work together to shape our judgments and decisions. \nEngaging the reader in a lively conversation about how we think\, Kahneman reveals where we can and cannot trust our intuitions and how we can tap into the benefits of slow thinking. He offers practical and enlightening insights into how choices are made in both our business and our personal lives—and how we can use different techniques to guard against the mental glitches that often get us into trouble. Thinking\, Fast and Slow will transform the way you think about thinking.
