SUMMARY:Okanagan - Penticton Skeptics in the Pub
DESCRIPTION:CFI Okanagan helps support a “Skeptics in the Pub” group in Penticton. This is a message from their organizer\, Angela: \nSkeptics in the Pub is a fun and friendly casual social event that welcomes all local science enthusiasts who value critical thinking\, reason\, and skepticism. If you agree that\, as Carl Sagan said\, “Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence”\, then join us for conversation\, drinks\, and food in a friendly atmosphere. (The gathering will be upstairs in the boardroom at the Barley Mill.) \nI’m really looking forward to meeting many of you and we can discuss how we go forward\, if we want a regular monthly meeting night\, to try different pubs and perhaps other events. \nMonday September 22nd is the Fall Equinox\, members of RASC Okanagan (http://www.ocrasc.ca/) will be hosting the public atop Munson Mountain to observe the sunset. The ‘Pen Henge’ stones mark where the sun sets on Solstices and Equinoxes\, very cool! 5.30 – 6.30 pm with sunset about 6.20pm. Everyone welcome\, bring a jacket\, it can be windy up there 🙂 \nhttp://www.pentictonwesternnews.com/community/130220358.html

SUMMARY:Okanagan - KFI: It's a Small World
DESCRIPTION:Join Kids for Inquiry for a program at the Okanagan Science Centre in Vernon! \nThe program starts at 10am\, using pond water that the science centre staff will have already collected. If your kids would like to collect their own pond water\, you can either bring some from home or arrive early to collect some from the pond in Polson Park\, just behind the science centre. Remember to bring a small\, clean jar (with a lid!) if you want to collect your own pond water. \nMap showing Polson Park\, and the pond: \nhttps://www.google.ca/maps/@50.2583193\,-119.2714038\,16z?hl=en \nDuring the program\, kids will prepare slides with the pond water\, and look at all the teeny tiny living things under microscopes. \nThe cost is $5 per child\, and includes the one hour program and one hour in the museum. (If you would like to stay longer\, you need either a membership\, or to pay for admission.) \nIf your child collects patches from DIY.org\, this program will help kids complete both the “Prepare a Slide” challenge and the “Observe Life Under a Microscope” challenge\, towards their Biologist patch: \nhttps://diy.org/skills/biologist \nCost for adults: It is the Science Centre’s policy for their programs that one adult per five children is free. There is a charge of $5 for each additional adult (unless the adults have memberships\, in which case they are free). CFI Okanagan will cover the cost for additional adults who accompany their children. When you pay the front desk staff\, please let them know whether you plan to drop off your child(ren) or stay with them and if you have a membership or not. Thank you!
