SUMMARY:CFI Freethinker's Book Club: Merchants of Doubt
DESCRIPTION:June’s book is: ‘Merchants Of Doubt’ by Naomi Oreskes and Erik M Conway \n \n— \nFrom Amazon.ca: \nMerchants of Doubt was one of the most talked-about climate change books of recent years\, for reasons easy to understand: It tells the controversial story of how a loose-knit group of high-level scientists and scientific advisers\, with deep connections in politics and industry\, ran effective campaigns to mislead the public and deny well-established scientific knowledge over four decades. The same individuals who claim the science of global warming is “not settled” have also denied the truth about studies linking smoking to lung cancer\, coal smoke to acid rain\, and CFCs to the ozone hole. “Doubt is our product\,” wrote one tobacco executive. These “experts” supplied it. \n— \nThe book is available from the Vancouver Public Library; as well as from online sellers such as Amazon.ca and Chapters.indigo.ca . Please make sure to read the book before the meeting! \nPlease bring your ideas for future books to the next meeting\, or email them to us. \nCFI Vancouver’s Book Club meets every second Saturday of the month at The Grind Coffee Shop on Main Street at King Edward. \nAdmission is free\, however please consider becoming a member of CFI and/or making a donation to help keep this and other programs running.

SUMMARY:Presentation - Why Tolerate Religion? (Saskatoon)
DESCRIPTION:University of Chicago philosopher and legal scholar\, Brian Leiter\, recently published an argument against allowing a special status for religious claims of conscience\, under the title of Why Tolerate Religion? He discusses the ideas of toleration and respect for others’ beliefs and whether these can support special claims for religious beliefs. Our resident Philosophy lecturer\, George Williamson\, will walk the group through the argument of the book. \n  \nPlease note: our monthly CFI Saskatoon Meetups are free to attend. You are not required to order any food or drink. If you do order something\, please remember to tip the waitress because they have a lot to keep track of with our group\, and they work around our table arrangements and presentation equipment.
