Aczel \nThe invention of numerals is perhaps the greatest abstraction the human mind has ever created. Virtually everything in our lives is digital\, numerical\, or quantified. The story of how and where we got these numerals\, which we so depend on\, has for thousands of years been shrouded in mystery. Finding Zero is an adventure filled saga of Amir Aczel’s lifelong obsession: to find the original sources of our numerals. Aczel has doggedly crisscrossed the ancient world\, scouring dusty\, moldy texts\, cross examining so-called scholars who offered wildly differing sets of facts\, and ultimately penetrating deep into a Cambodian jungle to find a definitive proof. Here\, he takes the reader along for the ride. \nThe history begins with the early Babylonian cuneiform numbers\, followed by the later Greek and Roman letter numerals. An active member of the Coalition to Protect the Farm\, Pete places the research at the farm in its historic and cultural context\, arguing for the importance of continuing research at the Farm by highlighting past successes. He also applies the lessons of environmental history and science & technologies studies to support agricultural science against the lingering effects of the last decade’s science wars\, emphasizing the importance of basic and applied government research in a time of changing climates. \nThe Coalition to Protect the Farm is a community organization dedicated to protecting the Central Experimental Farm (CEF) in Ottawa\, Ontario\, Canada. \nFounded in 1886\, the Central Experimental Farm is one of the longest running agricultural research facilities in the world. Hofstadter \nAccording to reviewer Greg Sewell this is not a simple read and many other community reviews on Goodreads would heartily agree. Sewell says the ideas are complex and the logic subtle\, but it is a completely satisfying book\, and reading it is one of those rare experiences when you leave feeling smarter than when you started. \nBy looking at the brilliant minds of mathematician Kurt Godel\, graphic artist M. C. Escher\, and composer Johann Sebastian Bach\, computer-science and cognitive-science professor Douglas Hofstadter ties together the aesthetic gift of pattern recognition and manipulation with theories on artificial intelligence\, human intelligence\, and the essence of self-awareness. Does that do the book justice? Not at all; Godel\, Escher\, Bach cannot be explained without delving deeply into the structure of the book itself and the analysis of self-representation Hofstadter weaves through his appreciation of the art of Bach\, the designs of Escher\, and the theories of Godel. \n

Hofstadter \nAccording to reviewer Greg Sewell this is not a simple read and many other community reviews on Goodreads would heartily agree. Sewell says the ideas are complex and the logic subtle\, but it is a completely satisfying book\, and reading it is one of those rare experiences when you leave feeling smarter than when you started. \nBy looking at the brilliant minds of mathematician Kurt Godel\, graphic artist M. C. Escher\, and composer Johann Sebastian Bach\, computer-science and cognitive-science professor Douglas Hofstadter ties together the aesthetic gift of pattern recognition and manipulation with theories on artificial intelligence\, human intelligence\, and the essence of self-awareness. Does that do the book justice? Not at all; Godel\, Escher\, Bach cannot be explained without delving deeply into the structure of the book itself and the analysis of self-representation Hofstadter weaves through his appreciation of the art of Bach\, the designs of Escher\, and the theories of Godel.

DESCRIPTION:February 12th is the birthday of Charles Darwin\, and “Darwin Day” is a global celebration of science and reason. This will be the 8th celebration in Saskatoon and the 6th year that the Saskatchewan Minister of Education has recognized February 12 as Darwin Day in Saskatchewan! \nThe Saskatoon Skeptics and Centre for Inquiry Saskatoon are proud to host the annual Darwin Day celebration in Saskatoon on February 13 at 1pm. Come and celebrate Darwin’s 207th birthday with 2 presentations followed by discussions\, cake and coffee. \nOur first speaker this year is Dr. Jeffrey Lane (pictured below)\, Assistant Professor\, Department of Biology\, University of Saskatchewan. Dr. Lane’s lab combines theory and techniques from ecology\, evolutionary biology\, quantitative genetics and physiology to better understand adaptation of populations to their natural environments. They primarily work with wild mammal systems that have been studied for multiple decades. Dr. Lane will be speaking about evolutionary responses to climate change. \n \nOur second speaker this year is Dr. Ryan McKellar (pictured below)\, Research Scientist\, Curator of Palaeontology\, Royal Saskatchewan Museum. Dr. McKellar’s current research is focused primarily on amber inclusions and composition. His presentation is entitled Evolution through the eyes of a palaeontologist\, in which we will explore the deep-time component of evolution\, using case studies drawn from trilobites\, as well as fossil insects preserved in amber. The fossil records of these groups provide excellent examples of diversification and extinction on a global scale. They also provide an opportunity to observe evolutionary patterns across millions of years. Darwin’s work has had a lasting impact on how palaeontologists view fossils as a source of data.
