SUMMARY:Darwin Day 2016!
DESCRIPTION:February 12th is the birthday of Charles Darwin\, and “Darwin Day” is a global celebration of science and reason. This will be the 8th celebration in Saskatoon and the 6th year that the Saskatchewan Minister of Education has recognized February 12 as Darwin Day in Saskatchewan! \nThe Saskatoon Skeptics and Centre for Inquiry Saskatoon are proud to host the annual Darwin Day celebration in Saskatoon on February 13 at 1pm. Come and celebrate Darwin’s 207th birthday with 2 presentations followed by discussions\, cake and coffee. \nOur first speaker this year is Dr. Jeffrey Lane (pictured below)\, Assistant Professor\, Department of Biology\, University of Saskatchewan. Dr. Lane’s lab combines theory and techniques from ecology\, evolutionary biology\, quantitative genetics and physiology to better understand adaptation of populations to their natural environments. They primarily work with wild mammal systems that have been studied for multiple decades. Dr. Lane will be speaking about evolutionary responses to climate change. \n \nOur second speaker this year is Dr. Ryan McKellar (pictured below)\, Research Scientist\, Curator of Palaeontology\, Royal Saskatchewan Museum. Dr. McKellar’s current research is focused primarily on amber inclusions and composition. His presentation is entitled Evolution through the eyes of a palaeontologist\, in which we will explore the deep-time component of evolution\, using case studies drawn from trilobites\, as well as fossil insects preserved in amber. The fossil records of these groups provide excellent examples of diversification and extinction on a global scale. They also provide an opportunity to observe evolutionary patterns across millions of years. Darwin’s work has had a lasting impact on how palaeontologists view fossils as a source of data. Ultimately\, this has made palaeontology a valuable addition to studies of the phylogeny (evolutionary relationships) and biogeography of modern organisms\, even with our increasing reliance on molecular or genetic studies. \n \nBelow is a photo from Dr. McKellar’s work of Chrysomelid beetle phylogeny. \n \n  \nSchedule of Events (subject to change): \n1:00 pm Introduction & 1st Presentation (Dr. Jeffrey Lane) \n2:30 pm 2nd Presentation (Dr. Ryan McKellar) \n3:30 pm Birthday Cake & Coffee (in the foyer – no food or drink is allowed in the theatre) \n5:00 pm Pub Discussion – anyone interested can join us for further discussion & cheer – at The Congress\, 215 2nd Avenue South \nYou are welcome to attend all or any part of the event. There will be some short activities for children. \nDonations are welcome and appreciated. Suggested donation: $10 (not required). Charitable donations of $20 or more to the Centre for Inquiry are eligible for a tax receipt if contact information is provided. \nCome out for an afternoon celebrating science! \nWe are looking for volunteers to help with the following tasks: \n1) Advertising – now! share the event in your electronic or physical community board or work place. Post the poster (available soon). \n2) Event set-up – 12:30pm Feb 13 \n3) Event assistance (e.g. door greeter\, sales table\, display table) – during event Feb 13 \n4) Event clean-up – 4:30-5pm Feb 13 \nPlease email Kendra if you are able to help out in any way.

Can an orchid get jet lag? Does a tomato plant feel pain when you pluck a fruit from its vines? And does your favourite fern care whether you play Bach or the Beatles? Combining cutting-edge research with lively storytelling\, biologist Daniel Chamovitz explores how plants experience our shared Earth – through sight\, smell\, touch\, hearing\, memory\, and even awareness. SUMMARY:CFIC T.O. – Science & Philosophy Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by CFI Canada member Vlad Bunea\, the goal is to provide a friendly\, free-thinking environment in which to discuss books that inspire rewarding conversation on subjects related to science\, philosophy and secularism. \nIt takes place at our National Headquarters\, 55 Eglinton Ave E.\, Suite 307\, from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. Suggested donation is $5. There is also an after-event at a location near the office and everyone is invited. \nTHIS MONTH’S BOOK SELECTION : Enlightenment 2.0: Restoring sanity to our politics\, our economy\, and our lives by Joseph Heath. The co-author of the internationally bestselling The Rebel Sell brings us “slow politics”: promoting slow thought\, slow deliberation and slow debate. \n \nOver the last twenty years\, the political systems of the western world have become increasingly divided–not between right and left but between crazy and non-crazy. What’s more\, the crazies seem to be gaining the upper hand. Rational thought cannot prevail in the current social and media environment\, where elections are won by appealing to voters’ hearts rather than their minds. The rapid-fire pace of modern politics\, the hypnotic repetition of daily news items and even the multitude of visual sources of information all make it difficult for the voice of reason to be heard. \nIn Enlightenment 2.0\, bestselling author Joseph Heath outlines a program for a second Enlightenment. The answer\, he argues\, lies in a new “slow politics.” It takes as its point of departure recent psychological and philosophical research that identifies quite clearly the social and environmental preconditions for the exercise of rational thought. It is impossible to restore sanity merely by being sane and trying to speak in a reasonable tone of voice. The only way to restore sanity is by engaging in collective action against the social conditions that have crowded it out. (goodreads.com)

Levitin. \nWhy does music evoke such powerful moods? The answers are at last becoming clear\, thanks to revolutionary neuroscience and the emerging field of evolutionary psychology. Both a cutting-edge study and a tribute to the beauty of music itself\, This Is Your Brain on Music unravels a host of mysteries that affect everything from pop culture to our understanding of human nature\, including: \n• Are our musical preferences shaped in utero?\n• Is there a cutoff point for acquiring new tastes in music?\n• What do PET scans and MRIs reveal about the brain’s response to music?\n• Is musical pleasure different from other kinds of pleasure? \nLevitin’s This Is Your Brain on Music explores cultures in which singing is considered an essential human function\, patients who have a rare disorder that prevents them from making sense of music\, and scientists studying why two people may not have the same definition of pitch. At every turn\, this provocative work unlocks deep secrets about how nature and nurture forge a uniquely human obsession.

SUMMARY:CFI Calgary Carl Sagan Day Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Come celebrate Carl Sagan Day with us! CFI Calgary is proud to present Roland Dechesne\, who is a Past President of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada. Carl Sagan was best known for his contributions to the scientific research of extra terrestrial life. Roland will catch us up on the scientific advancements in the two decades since Carl Sagan’s death. \nIf popular culture is to believed\, aliens regularly visit\, and sometimes interact with Earthlings\, perhaps over millennia. Using our knowledge of astronomy and physics\, can we estimate how likely it would be that alien civilisations would have targeted our humble planet for visits? Roland Dechesne thinks he can\, and perhaps the answers will surprise you. \nRoland Dechesne bio: Roland is a Past President of the Calgary Centre of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada and an amateur astronomer with over 35 years’ experience. He has been a popularizer of astronomy to the public for much of that time. His interests are astrophotography\, meteorites and light pollution abatement. He ‘moonlights’ as an oil and gas geologist during the day.

SUMMARY:CFIC T.O. - Dying With Dignity CEO Wanda Morris
DESCRIPTION:Wanda is the CEO of Dying With Dignity Canada and she will give a tailor-made talk for our CFI Canada community. Wanda will explain why those in the Atheist/secular/humanist movement should be particularly concerned about right-to-die issues. \nHer talk will cover the facts on physician assisted dying as a safe\, compassionate choice for Canadians facing unbearable suffering; the historic Supreme Court ruling in Carter v. Canada; and the Voice Your Choice Campaign which gives the tools you need to speak out for lasting change so that small but noisy “special interest” groups won’t curtail your rights. \nLet’s stand with the 84 per cent of Canadians who support compassion and choice at end of life. \nFREE for CFIC members (please bring your card) \n$5 for non-members (payment at the door) \n

SUMMARY:CFIC T.O. - Science & Philosophy Book Club - "Faith Versus Fact: Why Science and Religion Are Incompatible" by Jerry Coyne
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by CFIC members Christine Gagnon and Vlad Bunea\, this meeting takes place at our National Headquarters\, 55 Eglinton Ave E.\, Suite 307\, from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. Suggested donation is $5. \nThe goal is to provide a friendly\, free-thinking environment in which to discuss books that inspire rewarding conversation on subjects related to science and philosophy. \nWe had Jerry in our Toronto office back in June and in an act of shameless self-promotion before his evening lecture at OISE\, he graciously posed for a shot encouraging everyone to go out and buy his damn book Faith vs. FACT! And we have a number of signed copies available for sale in our office: $20 for CFIC members: $25 for non-members. \nJerry is no accomodationist. Oh\, no. No NOMA for him. In his provocative new book\, this evolutionary biologist lays out in clear\, dispassionate detail why the toolkit of science\, based on reason and empirical study\, is reliable\, while that of religion—including faith\, dogma\, and revelation—leads to incorrect\, untestable\, or conflicting conclusions. \nCoyne is responding to a national climate in which over half of Americans don’t believe in evolution (and congressmen deny global warming)\, and warns that religious prejudices and strictures in politics\, education\, medicine\, and social policy are on the rise. Extending the bestselling works of the Four Horsemen\, he demolishes the claims of religion to provide verifiable “truth” by subjecting those claims to the same tests we use to establish truth in science. \nCoyne irrefutably demonstrates the grave harm—to individuals and to our planet—in mistaking faith for fact in making the most important decisions about the world we live in.

SUMMARY:CFIC T.O. - Science & Philosophy Book Club - "Why Does the World Exist? An Existential Detective Story" by Jim Holt
DESCRIPTION:This is one of CFI Canada‘s most popular monthly events\, and that is mainly because of its two book-loving hosts\, CFI Canada members Christine Gagnon and Vlad Bunea. Come on out and enjoy the discussion. \nIt takes place at our National Headquarters\, 55 Eglinton Ave E.\, Suite 307\, from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. Suggested donation is $5. There is also an after-event at a location near the office and everyone is invited. \nThe goal is to provide a friendly\, free-thinking environment in which to discuss books that inspire rewarding conversation on subjects related to science and philosophy. \n \n“Why is there a world rather than nothing at all?” remains the darkest and most enduring of all metaphysical mysteries. Following in the footsteps of Lawrence Krauss\, Christopher Hitchens\, Roger Penrose\, and even Stephen Hawking\, Jim Holt\, an American philosopher\, author and essayist\, now enters this fractious debate with his lively and deeply informed narrative that traces the latest efforts to grasp the origins of the universe. \nThe slyly humorous Holt takes on the role of cosmological detective\, suggesting that we might have been too narrow in limiting our suspects to Yahweh vs. the Big Bang. Tracking down an eccentric Oxford philosopher\, a Physics Nobel Laureate\, a French Buddhist monk who lived with the Dalai Lama\, and John Updike just before he died\, Holt pursues unexplored angles to this cosmic puzzle. \nAs he pieces together a solution–one that sheds new light on the question of God and the meaning of existence–he offers brisk philosophical asides on time and eternity\, consciousness\, and the arithmetic of nothingness.

Catherine will tell us with a firsthand account. \nFrom Apostle to Apostate offers a comprehensive introduction to the Clergy Project\, established in 2011 to provide a safe space where clergy who have lost their faith can connect with others facing the exact same questions—often alone and in isolation. Catherine movingly demonstrates\, despite the substantial personal and professional challenges non-believing clergy face\, for many\, a loss of faith has turned out not to be a loss at all—but a gain of newfound community\, self-respect\, and honesty with themselves and others. \nCatherine Dunphy is a founding member and former executive director of the Clergy Project. She is the operations manager for Rational Doubt\, a blog where members of the Clergy Project connect with the public.  She was trained as a Roman Catholic Chaplain and she lives in ol’ T.O. \n

Ali G & Borat\, but he is no comic; he is a serious and award-winning British researcher who has investigated psychology and autism for decades. \nBorderline personality disorder\, autism\, narcissism\, psychosis\, Asperger’s: All of these syndromes have one thing in common–lack of empathy. In some cases\, this absence can be dangerous\, but in others it can simply mean a different way of seeing the world. \nIn The Science of Evil: On Empathy and the Origins of Cruelty Dr. Baron-Cohen develops a new brain-based theory of human cruelty. A true psychologist\, however\, he examines social and environmental factors that can erode empathy\, including neglect and abuse. \nBased largely on Baron-Cohen’s own research\, The Science of Evil will change the way we understand and treat human cruelty.

There is also an after-event at a location near the office and everyone is invited. \nThe goal is to provide a friendly\, free-thinking environment in which to discuss books that inspire rewarding conversation on subjects related to science and philosophy. \n \n“There are two motives for reading a book; one\, that you enjoy it; the other\, that you can boast about it.”\n― Bertrand Russell \nBertrand Russell. Iconoclast\, philosopher\, logician\, mathematician\, historian\, writer\, social critic\,  political activist\, rationalist. \nThe Conquest of Happiness is Bertrand Russell’s recipe for good living. First published by Liveright in 1930 – and some reviewers mentioned that the 85-year gap could be a factor for today’s reader – it certainly pre-dates the current obsession with self-help.  Russell attempted to diagnose the myriad causes of unhappiness in modern life and chart a path out of the seemingly inescapable malaise so prevalent even in safe and prosperous Western societies. Eschewing guilt-based morality\, Russell laid out a rationalist prescription for living a happy life\, including the importance of cultivating interests outside oneself and the dangers of passive pleasure.

SUMMARY:Okanagan - How Does The Creative Process Work?
DESCRIPTION:  \nHow do we come up with new ideas? Dr Liane Gabora will introduce a theory of creativity which need not involve multiple distinct candidate ideas\, or selection. According to the honing theory of creativity\, (1) Creative individuals reshape issues or ideas that are ill-formed by considering them from different perspectives or contexts\, (2) Intuition has a scientific explanation\, and (3) Creative outputs result from a reorganization of an individual’s view of the world. There is an interplay of the elements of a body of knowledge to solve problems\, to reduce dissonance\, and/or to accommodate unexpected events. Occasionally\, one thought triggers another\, which triggers an avalanche of conceptual change resulting ininsight. She will present converging evidence for honing theory from neuroscience\, studies of analogy formation and creative style\, a mathematical theory of concepts\, and a computer model of cultural evolution. \nLiane Gabora is an Associate Professor of Psychology and creativity studies at the University of British Columbia. Her research\, which employs both experimental studies with humans and computational models\, focuses on creativity and how creative ideas evolve over time as different people adapt them to their own needs and tastes and put their own spin on them. She has over 150 scholarly publications\, has obtained over one million dollars in research grants\, and has given lectures worldwide. She is also a published fiction writer\, co-owns a small mobile app company\, and composes music for piano. \nThis free event is in collaboration with the Okanagan Jewish Community Centre.

SUMMARY:CFIC T.O. - Science & Philosophy Book Club "Strange New Worlds: The Search for Alien Planets and Life Beyond Our Solar System" by Ray Jay
DESCRIPTION:This group is hosted by CFI Canada members Christine Gagnon and Vlad Bunea at our National Headquarters\, 55 Eglinton Ave E.\, Suite 307\, Buzzer Code 49\, from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. Suggested donation is $5. There is an after-event at a location near the office. \nThe goal is to provide a friendly\, free-thinking environment in which to discuss books that inspire rewarding conversation on subjects related to science and philosophy. \nIn Strange New Worlds\, renowned astronomer Ray Jayawardhana brings news from the front lines of the epic quest to find planets—and alien life—beyond our solar system.  In this book\, Ray vividly recounts the stories of the scientists and the remarkable breakthroughs that have ushered in this extraordinary age of exploration. He describes the latest findings—including his own—that are challenging our view of the cosmos and casting new light on the origins and evolution of planets and planetary systems. He reveals how technology is rapidly advancing to support direct observations of Jupiter-like gas giants and super-Earths—rocky planets with several times the mass of our own planet—and how astronomers use biomarkers to seek possible life on other worlds. \nCFIC Toronto‘s Events Coordinator\, Christopher Myrick gave his review on Goodreads: “Nice\, detailed history of astronomical exploration. Spiced with short biographies of astronomers\, and personal anecdotes\, breaking up and enlivening what could have been a story about filters\, lenses and equations. Opening and closing chapters harken to Sagan’s “Pale Blue Dot\,” in the latter with explicit reference. Much easier physics than what is found in “Neutrino Hunters\,” though Jupiter-sized objects are more comprehensible than the sub-atomic. As with many of my favorite science writers – such as Matt Ridley and Olivia Judson – Jayawardhana cut his teeth at “The Economist.” \nRay Jaywardhana\, aka Ray Jay\, is currently the dean of science and a professor of physics & astronomy at York University. He had been a professor and the Canada Research Chair in Observational Astrophysics at the University of Toronto.
