SUMMARY:John Rawls's Theory of Justice (Saskatoon)
DESCRIPTION:John Rawls’s A Theory of Justice was one of the most important and controversial books in philosophy of the second half of the Twentieth Century. \n \n \nFor this month’s meet up\, we are hosting a talk / discussion on Rawls’s theory\, given to us by Will Buschert\, of the UofS Philosophy and Political Science departments. \nRawls’s theory of justice revolves around the adaptation of two fundamental principles of justice which would\, in turn\, guarantee a just and morally acceptable society. The first principle guarantees the right of each person to have the most extensive basic liberty compatible with the liberty of others. The second principle states that social and economic positions are to be (a) to everyone’s advantage and (b) open to all. \nA key problem for Rawls is to show how such principles would be universally adopted\, and here the work borders on general ethical issues. He introduces a theoretical “veil of ignorance” in which all the “players” in the social game would be placed in a situation which is called the “original position.” Having only a general knowledge about the facts of “life and society\,” each player is to make a “rationally prudential choice” concerning the kind of social institution they would enter into contract with. By denying the players any specific information about themselves it forces them to adopt a generalized point of view that bears a strong resemblance to the moral point of view. “Moral conclusions can be reached without abandoning the prudential standpoint and positing a moral outlook merely by pursuing one’s own prudential reasoning under certain procedural bargaining and knowledge constraints.”

SUMMARY:The Science and Philosophy Book Club - Reinventing the sacred : a new view of science\, reason and religion by Stuart A. Kauffman
DESCRIPTION:This group is dedicated to providing a friendly\, free-thinking environment in which to discuss books that inspire rewarding conversation on subjects related to science and philosophy. \nConsider the complexity of a living cell after 3.8 billion years of evolution. Is it more awesome to suppose that a transcendent God fashioned the cell at a stroke\, or to realize that it evolved with no Almighty Hand\, but arose on its own in the changing biosphere? In this bold and fresh look at science and religion\, complexity theorist Stuart Kauffman argues that the qualities of divinity that we revere—creativity\, meaning\, purposeful action—are properties of the universe that can be investigated methodically. He offers stunning evidence for this idea in an abundance of fields\, from cell biology to the philosophy of mind\, and uses it to find common ground between belief systems often at odds with one another.A daring and ambitious argument for a new understanding of natural divinity\, ‘Reinventing the Sacred’ challenges readers both scientifically and philosophically. \n

SUMMARY:Fundraising Event: Brunch\, Interview and Q & A with Dr. Jill Tarter
DESCRIPTION:Fundraising Event: Brunch\, Interview and Q & A with Dr. Jill Tarter\, Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Icon and the inspiration behind Carl Sagan’s protagonist in Contact \nThe event will consist of a catered brunch reception\, featuring an interview with Dr. Jill Tarter conducted by Justin Trottier\, CFI Spokesperson and Host of The Star Spot\, an astronomy podcast and radio show. Following the interview Dr. Tarter will be available for Q & A and conversation. \nAstronomer Jill Tarter is the holder of the Bernard M. Oliver Chair for SETI. She is one of the few researchers to have devoted her career to hunting for signs of sentient beings\, and there are few aspects of this field that have not been affected by her work. \nJill was the lead for Project Phoenix\, a decade-long SETI scrutiny of about 750 nearby star systems\, using telescopes in Australia\, West Virginia and Puerto Rico. While no clearly extraterrestrial signal was found\, this was the most comprehensive targeted search for artificially generated cosmic signals ever undertaken. Now Jill heads up the Institute’s efforts to build and operate the Allen Telescope Array\, a massive new instrument that will eventually comprise 350 antennas\, each 6 meters in diameter. This telescope will be able to enormously increase the speed\, and the spectral search range\, of the Institute’s hunt for signals. A subset of the full array will begin operations in the Fall of 2007. \nIndeed\, being as much of an icon of SETI as Jill is\, perhaps it is not surprising that the Jodie Foster character in the movie “Contact” is largely based on this real-life researcher. \n\n  \nWhen: Friday September 27th\, 3pm \nWhere: Hart House\, 7 Hart House Circle\, Debates Room (second floor)\, University of Toronto \nHow Much: $50 \nBuy tickets: cfiequinoxcelebration.eventbrite.com

SUMMARY:Lecture Series - A Secret Part of Our Legal Tradition Humanism\, Social Justice\, and the Power of Juries Featuring Gary Bauslaugh\, Author
DESCRIPTION:Canadians know that the jurors at a trial decide the defendant’s guilt or innocence according to the law of the land. What they don’t know is how far that right actually goes\,\nand what the real power of juries is. \nSometimes people — even jurors — wonder if a law or a judgment in a particular case is a just one. When the law seems wrong\, we are told there is only one solution: change the law. \nIn fact\, though\, in our legal system there is another remedy: When jurors decide that to question the fairness of applying the law in the case they are deciding may lead to a manifestly unfair and unjust result\, they have the right not to apply that law. However\, in Canada it is illegal and completely forbidden for a trial lawyer\, or even a judge to tell jurors they have this right to nullify the law. \nIn the Canadian justice system\, jurors can hand down a verdict of not guilty even if the facts pointing to guilt are clear\, even if the accused doesn’t deny the facts\, even if the judge tells the jurors to find the accused guilty. This centuries-old safeguard\, which goes along with the principle of jury independence\, has protected people’s rights and freedoms and helped sweep away laws that ordinary citizens think are outdated and unjust. \nThis power of juries is known to the legal community — but is largely unknown by the general public — until now. Gary Bauslaugh\, author of Robert Latimer\, A Story of Justice and Mercy (Lorimer\, 2010)\, learned the specifics of this matter as a result of his research around the Robert Latimer case. In his new book\, written for non-expert readers and citizens who have been summoned for jury duty\, he tells the story of jury nullification from Quaker leader William Penn to the modern-day acquittal of Henry Morgentaler\, who was charged with conducting abortions. Bauslaugh then lays out the arguments that some people make against jury independence and nullification\, and makes his own argument in favour of these safeguards. He offers suggestions for jurors who may find themselves in a situation where their consciences are at odds with the law. \n  \n  \nWhen: Friday September 27th\, 7pm \nWhere: University College (UC 179)\, 15 King’s College Circle\, University of Toronto \nHow Much: $10\n \nBuy tickets: cfiequinoxcelebration.eventbrite.com

SUMMARY:Sons of Perdition\, film screening.
DESCRIPTION:In the desert of Utah hides Colorado City\, the oldest polygamist compound in the United States. Here men have plural wives and raise their children by the strict code of the Fundamentalist Latter Day Saint religion (FLDS). \nAfter his rise to power\, the prophet Warren Jeffs began a systematic effort to cleanse his flock. He banned schooling\, books\, recreations\, and excommunicated prominent men\, marrying their women to other men. Hundreds of teenage boys were exiled to the streets\, giving up their families and salvation. \nSons of Perdition follows three boys after they leave Colorado City.  With limited educations and rarely a stable address\, the obstacles are enormous.  All the boys have big dreams—starting with the hope of attending high school—but what they want most is contact with their families. For one teen in the film\, this means numerous attempts to help his fourteen-year-old sister escape before an arranged marriage. \nWith unprecedented access\, Sons of Perdition takes audiences on a three-year-journey into the lives of these remarkable teens\, providing the inside analysis to make this intimate portrait a big story—a timely\, critical look at faith\, family and religious exile in mainstream America. \n

SUMMARY:The Science and Philosophy Book Club - The Red Queen: Sex and the Evolution of Human Nature by Matt Ridley
DESCRIPTION:This group is dedicated to providing a friendly\, free-thinking environment in which to discuss books that inspire rewarding conversation on subjects related to science and philosophy. \nMatt Ridley demonstrates why sex is humanity’s best strategy for outwitting its constantly mutating internal predators. The Red Queen answers dozens of other riddles of human nature and culture — including why men propose marriage\, the method behind our maddening notions of beauty\, and the disquieting fact that a woman is more likely to conceive a child by an adulterous lover than by her husband. Brilliantly written\, The Red Queen offers an extraordinary new way of interpreting the human condition and how it has evolved. \nWhen: Monday August 26th\, 7pm \nWhere: Centre for Inquiry (2 College Street Suite 214) \nHow Much: $4 Recommended Donation

SUMMARY:Montreal Freethinkers Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Hello fellow freethinkers. This month we were going to be reading “Why People Believe Weird Things”  By Michael Shermer. This book not only deals with religion but also goes into the “wonderful world of woo”\, and even alien abductions. \nIn this age of supposed scientific enlightenment\, many people still believe in mind reading\, past-life regression theory\, New Age hokum\, and alien abduction. A no-holds-barred assault on popular superstitions and prejudices\, with more than 80\,000 copies in print\, Why People Believe Weird Things debunks these nonsensical claims and explores the very human reasons people find otherworldly phenomena\, conspiracy theories\, and cults so appealing. In an entirely new chapter\, “Why Smart People Believe in Weird Things\,” Michael Shermer takes on science luminaries like physicist Frank Tippler and others\, who hide their spiritual beliefs behind the trappings of science. \nShermer\, science historian and true crusader\, also reveals the more dangerous side of such illogical thinking\, including Holocaust denial\, the recovered-memory movement\, the satanic ritual abuse scare\, and other modern crazes. Why People Believe Strange Things is an eye-opening resource for the most gullible among us and those who want to protect them. \nI have placed a few youtube videos to highlight the author and what the book is about. \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8T_jwq9ph8k \nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yxg21F_I5U0 \nCome Join your local CFI Montreal Freethinkers at Café Commensal ( Metro station Berri-UQaM)\, where a book title will be selected for each one of us to read\, and then engage in discussions and debates afterward. \nFeel free to contact Andrew Cody if you have any questions or suggestions. We will be meeting every third Sunday of the month. If you’re not a CFI member yet\, please consider joining us today! Click on http://cficanada.ca/support

DESCRIPTION:CFI-Canada has been a long-time supporter of LGBT rights\, and a participant in pride parades across the nation. In Montreal\, CFI has walked in Fierté Montréal parade since 2010. \nOur motto\, “Stop faith-based bigotry\,” is a reminder that most of the barriers held up against LGBT equality are religiously motivated\, as highlighted by the recent battle to get publicly funded Catholic schools to allow GSA (Gay-Straight Alliance) clubs. \nThis year\, we are partnering up with Concordia Freethought and Humanist Student Association to show CFI’s support for the LGBT community. We invite CFI members to join us with your friends and family to celebrate and defend equality! \nMore details to follow!

SUMMARY:Film Screening and Discussion: Sons of Perdition
\nWhen: Friday August 16th\, 7pm \nWhere: Raindance Toronto (276 Carlaw Ave. Suite 222)\n \nHow Much: $5 Donation

SUMMARY:CFI Freethinker's Book Club: When God Talks Back
DESCRIPTION:August’s book is: ‘When God Talks Back: Understanding the American Evangelical Relationship with God’ by T.M. Luhrmann \n  \nFrom Amazon.ca: \nA bold approach to understanding the American evangelical experience from an anthropological and psychological perspective by one of the country’s most prominent anthropologists. \nThrough a series of intimate\, illuminating interviews with various members of the Vineyard\, an evangelical church with hundreds of congregations across the country\, Tanya Luhrmann leaps into the heart of evangelical faith. Combined with scientific research that studies the effect that intensely practiced prayer can have on the mind\, When God Talks Back examines how normal\, sensible people—from college students to accountants to housewives\, all functioning perfectly well within our society—can attest to having the signs and wonders of the supernatural become as quotidian and as ordinary as laundry. Astute\, sensitive\, and extraordinarily measured in its approach to the interface between science and religion\, Luhrmann’s book is sure to generate as much conversation as it will praise. \nThe book is available from the Vancouver Public Library; as well as from online sellers such as Amazon.ca and Chapters.indigo.ca . Please make sure to read the book before the meeting! \n \nPlease bring your ideas for future books to the next meeting\, or email them to us (mwelch at cficanada dot ca). \nCFI Vancouver’s Book Club meets every second Saturday of the month at The Grind Coffee Shop on Main Street at King Edward. \n  \nAdmission is free\, however please consider becoming a member of CFI and/or making a donation to help keep this and other programs running\n. \n

SUMMARY:Moral Reasoning in a Pluralistic World
DESCRIPTION:Moral reasoning is the process we engage in when we try to figure out what is right or wrong to do and why. Moral reasoning is puzzling. On the one hand\, moral disagreement and the diversity of moral thinking suggest to some that moral reasoning is impossible or pointless. On the other hand\, almost everyone engages in such reasoning\, if only to find fault with those they disagree with. How should we reason morally in a world with varying moral outlooks\, diversity of moral views\, and substantial moral disagreement? Moral reasoning is often associated with the search for a single overarching value or principle — to be “principled” is to endorse a single value such as overall well-being\, or liberty\, and to follow a single principle based on it\, as in cost-benefit analysis or libertarianism. I argue that this approach is misguided. The proper form of moral reasoning involves finding principled compromises\, prioritizing among distinct and conflicting values — such as fairness\, honesty\, respect for autonomy — and being consistent from one case to another. It follows from this that moral disagreement and diversity do not undermine the possibility of reasoning.\n\nDr. Patricia Marino is an associate professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Waterloo. She is the current co-President of the Society for the Philosophy of Sex and Love\, and a former Humanities Fellow at Stanford University. Her research focuses on topics in ethics\, philosophy of sex\, and philosophy of economics.\n\n\n\nLocation: Sidney Smith Hall\, Room SS 1084\, University of Toronto\n100 St. George Street\n\nTime: Friday August 9th\n7:00pm\n\nCost: $5\nFree for Friends of the Centre
