SUMMARY:Is God a Figment of our Imagination?
DESCRIPTION:Religion and Society Debate: Dr. Michael Shermer and Dr. Alister McGrath \n“Is God a Figment of Our Imagination?” \nIs religious belief a vestige of a past age\, destined for extinction\,\nand are the many religious adherents of the world\, merely ignorant and\nmisguided?  Or is there within the theistic framework a resonance with\nreality that presses the notion of God beyond the mere subjective\nmusings of those that claim it to be so? \nJoin CFI Canada and Wycliffe College for a dialogue between two\nleading thinkers who have thoughtfully wrestled with this question\,\neach not only having embarked on a personal pilgrimage\, but each\nbringing a lifetime of erudition\, experience\, and insights to bear on\nthis theme. Dr. Alister McGrath\, the atheist who would become a\ntheist\, and Dr. Michael Shermer\, the theist who would become an\natheist. Join us at Convocation Hall\, University of Toronto for an\nengaging two hours of thoughtful dialogue on one of histories greatest\nquestions. \nFor a quarter century\, Dr. Shermer has been a leader in the promotion\nof Science\, Reason\, and Secular Values. He is the Publisher of Skeptic\nmagazine\, a monthly columnist for Scientific American\, and a\nPresidential Fellow at Chapman University where he teaches Skepticism\n101. He is the author of Why People Believe Weird Things\, Why Darwin\nMatters\, The Science of Good and Evil\, and The Moral Arc. His next\nbook is Heavens on Earth: The Scientific Search for the Afterlife\,\nImmortality & Utopia. \nDr McGrath holds the Andreas Idreos Professorship in Science and\nReligion at the University of Oxford. As a former atheist\, McGrath is\nrespectful yet critical of the movement. In recent years\, he has been\nespecially interested in the emergence of “scientific atheism”\, and\nhas researched the distinctive approach to atheist apologetics found\nin the writings of the Oxford zoologist and scientific populariser\nRichard Dawkins. He regularly engages in debate and dialogue with\nleading atheists\, and is presently researching the iconic role played\nby Charles Darwin in atheist apologetics. \nThe debate will be at 7:30 p.m.\, Friday 15 September\, at University of\nToronto’s Convocation hall. Details and tickets available at:\nhttps://www.wycliffecollege.ca/religionandsociety \n

SUMMARY:The Atheist Muslim - Ali Rizvi
DESCRIPTION:For the next in our “Teach the Controversy” speaker series\, the Centre for Inquiry is pleased to present physician\, author\, musician and activist Ali Rizvi discussing his recent book\, The Atheist Muslim. \nDr Rizvi aims to give a voice to the growing number of freethinkers and secularists in the Muslim world. “The Atheist Muslim” recounts Dr. Rizvi’s journey from religion to reason\, and his efforts to create a platform for others like him who wish to lose their religion without losing their broader cultural identity. Building on this incredible story\, this talk will bring to light the physical danger\, censorship\, ostracism and other challenges faced by secular and atheist Muslims\, including those residing in the West. Dr. Rizvi will also dissect the term “Islamophobia” and speak about the need for one to be able to criticize Islam\, without resorting to anti-Muslim bigotry. There will be a booksigning following the talk. Copies of The Atheist Muslim are available for pre-order with your ticket purchase; a limited number will be available for sale at the event. \nSee http://centreforinquiry.ca/the-atheist-muslim-ali-rizvi-in-ottawa/
