SUMMARY:TORONTO: Science and Philosophy Book Club - The Structure of Scientific Revolutions by Thomas S. Kuhn
DESCRIPTION:This group is dedicated to providing a friendly\, free-thinking environment in which to discuss books that inspire rewarding conversation on subjects related to science and philosophy. \nThe Structure of Scientific Revolutions \nBy Thomas S. Kuhn & Ian Hacking \nThe Structure of Scientific Revolutions\, was first published in 1962\, it was a landmark event in the history and philosophy of science. Fifty years later\, it still has many lessons to teach. \nWith The Structure of Scientific Revolutions\, Kuhn challenged long-standing linear notions of scientific progress\, arguing that transformative ideas don’t arise from the day-to-day\, gradual process of experimentation and data accumulation but that the revolutions in science\, those breakthrough moments that disrupt accepted thinking and offer unanticipated ideas\, occur outside of “normal science\,” as he called it. Though Kuhn was writing when physics ruled the sciences\, his ideas on how scientific revolutions bring order to the anomalies that amass over time in research experiments are still instructive in our biotech age. \n(excerpt from the Toronto Public Library) \nWhen: Monday January 27th\, 7pm \nWhere: Scallywags\, 11 St Clair Ave W \nHow Much: $4 Recommended Donation

SUMMARY:Creationism Vs Evolution Debate - Part 1 Event
DESCRIPTION:Bill Nye The Science Guy Vs Ken Ham. This debate is taking place at the Creation Museum. We will have a live feed of the debate at Ten Nightclub. The debate starts at 5 PM and doors will open at 4:30. Yes it is early\, but join us when you can. \nFollowing the debate\, we will move 2 blocks to The Pig and Duke for our regular Skeptics in The Pub. Who knows what we will talk about there… \nShould Bill Nye debate a creationist and give that view any credibility? Most people are saying no. Will this change any minds? Probably not. Am I interested in seeing this potential train wreck and will be yelling at the screen at the stupidity of arguments that will be taken seriously? Most likely. \nBill Nye created a YouTube video in 2012 taking aim at creationism and explained why evolution denial is detrimental to society. He is now the most well-known public intellectual fighting for Science. \n \nThis event is held at a licensed Night Club. All attendees must have valid government issued ID due to Alberta Liquor and Gaming Laws. There are no exceptions.   \nFor more information\, see the official meet-up event page.

SUMMARY:2014 Darwin Day Celebration!
DESCRIPTION:February 12th is the birthday of Charles Darwin\, and “Darwin Day” is a global celebration of science and reason. This will be the 6th celebration in Saskatoon and the 4th year that the Saskatchewan Minister of Education has recognised February 12 as Darwin Day in Saskatchewan! \nThe University of Saskatchewan Freethought Alliance\, Saskatoon Skeptics and Centre for Inquiry Saskatchewan are proud to host the annual Darwin Day celebration in Saskatoon on February 12 at 7pm. \nCome and help us celebrate Darwin’s 205th birthday with a presentation followed by a discussion. Our speaker this year is U of S Dept of Anatomy and Cell Biology Professor Julia Boughner: \nSurvival of the…Happiest? The evolutionary use of happiness\, Darwin-style \nHuman culture is arguably as important as human biology for our species’ survival and success. In an age when a lot of us have more resources than our ancestors ever did\, many of us still find it difficult if not impossible to be happy. Based on Darwin’s own suggestion that “the vigorous\, the healthy\, and the happy survive and multiply” this talk explores the evolutionary benefits of happiness in the 21st century. \nBirthday cake and coffee will be available in the foyer following the event. Note that no food or drink is permitted in the theatre. \nSchedule of Events (subject to change): \n6:30 pm Doors open \n7:00 pm Introduction & Presentation \n8:30 pm Birthday Cake & Coffee \n9:30 pm Pub Discussion (anyone interested can join us for further discussion & cheer – at nearby The Woods Ale House) \nYou are welcome to attend all or any part of the event. \nDonations are welcome and appreciated. Suggested donation: $10 (not required). Charitable donations to the Centre for Inquiry Saskatoon are eligible for a tax receipt if contact information is provided. \nCome out for an evening celebrating science! \n\nWe are looking for volunteers to help with the following tasks: \n1) Putting up posters – ASAP \n2) Event set-up – 6:00pm Feb 12 \n3) Event assistance (e.g. door greeter\, sales table\, display table\, speaker contact at event) – during event Feb 12 \n4) Event clean-up – 9:00-9:30pm Feb 12 \nPlease email Kendra if you are able to help out in any way.

SUMMARY:TORONTO: Science and Philosophy Book Club - Life at the Speed of Light: From the Double Helix to the Dawn of Digital Life
DESCRIPTION:This group is dedicated to providing a friendly\, free-thinking environment in which to discuss books that inspire rewarding conversation on subjects related to science and philosophy. Life at the Speed of Light: From the Double Helix to the Dawn of Digital Life by Craig Venter The renowned scientist and author of A Life Decoded examines the creation of life in the new field of synthetic genomics. In 2010\, scientists led by J. Craig Venter became the first to successfully create “synthetic life”—putting humankind at the threshold of the most important and exciting phase of biological research\, one that will enable us to actually write the genetic code for designing new species to help us adapt and evolve for long-term survival. The science of synthetic genomics will have a profound impact on human existence\, including chemical and energy generation\, health\, clean water and food production\, environmental control\, and possibly even our evolution. In Life at the Speed of Light\, Venter presents a fascinating and authoritative study of this emerging field from the inside—detailing its origins\, current challenges and controversies\, and projected effects on our lives. This scientific frontier provides an opportunity to ponder anew the age-old question “What is life?” and examine what we really mean by “playing God.” Life at the Speed of Light is a landmark work\, written by a visionary at the dawn of a new era of biological engineering. SUMMARY:Okanagan - Skeptics in the Park: 2014 Edition
DESCRIPTION:This is a fun and relaxing gathering where like-minded members of the community can get together as adults\, or with their families. Having a chance to connect with each other can be a lot of fun\, and something that CFI members are interested in promoting.\nWe will gather in Mission Creek Park to the left of the new playground near the empty grass area. If you are early\, or late\, or lost – please text Rebekah Pearce 250-808-9968\, so she can make sure everything runs smoothly. \nIt is a plan to have an experienced ‘someone’ present\, to guide interested people on a small walk in search of springtime amphibians (salamanders) and reptiles (snakes). \nFor those who stay at the meeting place\, or on the playground with there children there will be a carafe of coffee\, and some water. Feel free to bring your lunches\, or snacks to eat while we explore and visit with one another.

SUMMARY:The Science of Shakespeare - A Talk by Dan Falk
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, May 16\, CFI Toronto will be hosting a talk by Dan Falk\, author of The Science of Shakespeare: a New Look at the Playwright’s Universe. Falk’s Talk provides highlights from his book\, now available on Goose Lane Editions. \n \nThe Science of Shakespeare explores the connections between Shakespeare’s novel observations of human nature and the larger scientific revolution that was just then getting underway. Falk argues that the legendary playwright was well aware of the changes in the air\, and that he played an important and overlooked role in ushering in a more “modern” way of thinking. \nGeneral admission is $15\, or $10 for CFI members. Click here for tickets and other admission options. \nFalk is a science journalist\, author\, and broadcaster. His books include In Search of Time: Journeys along a Curious Dimension and Universe on a T-Shirt: The Quest for the Theory of Everything\, winner of the 2002 Science in Society Journalism Award. He has written for the Globe and Mail\, the Toronto Star\, The Walrus\, Astronomy\, Sky & Telescope\, and New Scientist; he has also been a regular contributor to CBC Radio’s Ideas. Falk recently completed a prestigious Knight Journalism Fellowship at MIT\, where he undertook much of the research for this book.
