SUMMARY:Okanagan - Ask-A-Geologist Hike
DESCRIPTION:Adults and kids are welcome to join this event. (Parents\, please stay with your kids for this one.) \nCome on a hike with geologist\, James Barr\, at Gallagher’s Canyon in Scenic Canyon Regional Park to see some interesting rock formations! \nJames is Professional Geoscientist who has worked in the mineral exploration and mine development industry for the past twelve years. He has worked all across Canada\, including the northern territories\, Mexico and Tanzania. He moved to Kelowna in April of this year with his family. James enjoys exploring all of the exciting features in the area with his two kids (4 and 2 yrs) and is looking forward to make some new discoveries with you. \nKids: Bring a rock or two from your collection and ask him to identify them for you! Maybe you can stump him. 😉 Don’t bring anything too precious\, and make sure they fit in your pocket! You’re going to need to carry them on your hike. 🙂 \nDon’t forget a water bottle and maybe a snack. And dress for the weather. We will hike down into the canyon\, stop for a rest and to ask James any questions\, before hiking back up. \nIf you collect DIY patches\, this activity can count towards your Geologist patch. Perhaps you could complete the “Identify a rock” skill or the “Talk with a geologist” skill: https://diy.org/skills/geologist \nPark in the lot at the end of Field Rd – this is where the trail leads down to the canyon. You can search for the destination on Google Maps by entering the address 3801 Field Rd\, Kelowna. \nLink to map: http://tinyurl.com/pvgh9db

SUMMARY:Okanagan - Informal Q&A Seminar with Dr Richard Carrier
DESCRIPTION:Come and ask historian\, atheist and blogger\, Richard Carrier any question you like! This event is free\, but donations are very much appreciated! \nHere are some sample questions\, for inspiration: \nHistory:\nA. Are Christians right when they claim the Christian worldview made modern science possible?\nB. How did ancient science differ from modern science?\nC. When faced with the claim Jesus didn’t historically exist\, how do we tell good arguments from bad?\nD. What are some of the most egregiously false claims Christians make about the ancient world in defense of their religion being true? \nPhilosophy:\nA. How do we respond to the latest arguments against atheism?\nB. What are some new arguments for atheism?\nC. How do we construct a defensible morality without religion?\nD. How does Bayesian reasoning work and what benefits would it bring once we learn it? \nMovement:\nA. What should the future direction of the North American atheist movement be?\nB. If it’s not enough to just be an atheist\, what else should we be promoting among atheists?\nC. How do we resolve the current conflicts in the atheism movement?\nD. As up-and-coming participants\, how in future can we help make the atheism movement more awesome and useful to fellow atheists and society as a whole? \nMore info about Richard Carrier: http://www.richardcarrier.info/ \nHis blog: http://freethoughtblogs.com/carrier/ \nPlease feel free to drop in any time\, and leave any time. We’re keeping this very casual. \nRoom 2181\, Engineering\, Management & Education building. Here’s a link to a map\, showing the building on the right hand side\, near the pond. Visitor parking is also shown on the map. \nhttp://ok.ubc.ca/campusmap/

SUMMARY:Richard Carrier: How to Disprove a Religion
DESCRIPTION:TOPIC: How do History and Science Prove or Disprove a Religion \n \nDr. Carrier will show how the history of religions is already all on its own a conclusive disproof of them. If any were true\, history\, and the world\, would have turned out entirely differently. Jesus would not have told us to stop washing our hands\, for one thing. And he would have actually existed\, for another. Judaism and Islam are likewise examined. Come join us for an irreverent\, entertaining\, and educational tour. \nTICKETS (purchased at the door) \n$10/person \nCFI members and students $5/person (renew your membership!) \nNOTES \n• Autographed books available \n• Door prizes \n• See separate event for meet and greet dinner with Carrier before the talk \n• Question period after the talk \n• Coffee available \nWe’ll likely head to a pub on Broadway after the talk \nVOLUNTEERS \nWe need volunteers to assist with poster distribution\, event day set-up and clean-up as well as door greeting. Please contact Kendra if you can assist in any way. \nBIOGRAPHY \nRichard Carrier\, Ph.D.\, is a philosopher and historian with degrees from Berkeley and Columbia\, specializing in the contemporary philosophy of naturalism\, and in Greco-Roman philosophy\, science\, and religion\, including the origins of Christianity. He blogs and lectures worldwide\, teaches courses online at Partners for Secular Activism\, and is the author of many books\, including his defense of a naturalist worldview in Sense and Goodness without God\, his academic case for the non-existence of Jesus in On the Historicity of Jesus\, his work on historical methodology in Proving History\, his responses to 21st century Christian apologetics in Why I Am Not a Christian and Not the Impossible Faith\, and an anthology of his papers on the subject of history in Hitler Homer Bible Christ. He has also authored chapters in many other books\, and articles in magazines and academic journals\, and on his namesake blog. For more about Dr. Carrier and his work see www.richardcarrier.info. \nSUPPORT \nWithout your support\, the Centre for Inquiry cannot put on major events such as this. We encourage you to donate or join as a Friend of the Centre. CFI is a nationally registered educational charity and all donations over $20 are eligible for a tax receipt. \nVENUE ACCESSIBILITY \nThe lower level of the library only accessible by stairs. We regret that we have been unable to find a suitable venue that is more accessible.

SUMMARY:Okanagan - Penticton Skeptics in the Pub
DESCRIPTION:CFI Okanagan helps support a “Skeptics in the Pub” group in Penticton. This is a message from their organizer\, Angela: \nSkeptics in the Pub is a fun and friendly casual social event that welcomes all local science enthusiasts who value critical thinking\, reason\, and skepticism. If you agree that\, as Carl Sagan said\, “Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence”\, then join us for conversation\, drinks\, and food in a friendly atmosphere. (The gathering will be upstairs in the boardroom at the Barley Mill.) \nI’m really looking forward to meeting many of you and we can discuss how we go forward\, if we want a regular monthly meeting night\, to try different pubs and perhaps other events. \nMonday September 22nd is the Fall Equinox\, members of RASC Okanagan (http://www.ocrasc.ca/) will be hosting the public atop Munson Mountain to observe the sunset. The ‘Pen Henge’ stones mark where the sun sets on Solstices and Equinoxes\, very cool! 5.30 – 6.30 pm with sunset about 6.20pm. Everyone welcome\, bring a jacket\, it can be windy up there 🙂 \nhttp://www.pentictonwesternnews.com/community/130220358.html

SUMMARY:Okanagan - KFI End of Summer Special: Remote Controller!
DESCRIPTION:  \nOne of the wonderful things about science is the cool gadgets it enables people to make. And some of those cool gadgets are toys! 🙂 \nIf you have a remote controlled toy — puppy\, car\, spider\, helicopter\, whatever — bring it out to the park and play with other KFI kids! (If you don’t have one\, you’re very welcome to come and watch.) \nBring something (such as different sized boxes\, ramps\, pool noodles\, bean bags\, hula hoops — anything to navigate over\, under\, around or through) to help create obstacle courses for the RC vehicles. \nKids: This activity can count towards your RCer patch on DIY.org:https://diy.org/skills/rcer \nParents: Remember to bring a camera to record your kid’s RCing to upload to the DIY.org website. \nAfter we’re done with the RC toys\, the kids can play at the water park (weather permitting\, of course)\, so bring a swim suit and towel. \nWe will gather on the path near the basketball court on the east side of the park. If you drive\, you will want to park in the lot on Franklyn Road. The park will be busy because there’s a City event going on at the waterpark.

SUMMARY:Okanagan - Field Trip to Okanagan Observatory
DESCRIPTION:  \nUpdate: Looks like the weather will cooperate\, so we are good to go! See you there! \nThis event is for both adults and kids who can keep their eyes open at that time of night! (We’ve organized it during the summer\, so it’s not really cold and it’s not on a school night.) \nPlease come out and join the Okanagan Centre chapter of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada at the Okanagan Observatory for a evening of stargazing. They’re opening the observatory\, especially for us — so if you can bring a donation for them\, that would be lovely and much appreciated\, I’m sure. \nThere should be nice\, dark skies\, enabling us to see Mars and Saturn\, as well as star clusters\, galaxies\, super nova remnants and what our Sun will look like in 5 billion years…. so long as the weather cooperates! \nIMPORTANT: If the weather is dicey on the 27th\, please check Facebook\, or Meetup\, or the CFI Canada website for confirmation that the event is happening before heading out to the observatory. \nThere’s a map to the observatory here: http://www.okanaganobservatory.ca/location.html \nCFI Okanagan volunteer\, Ryan Gerber\, will be your host for this event. Please\, don’t be shy\, and introduce yourself if you haven’t met! 🙂

SUMMARY:TORONTO: Science and Philosophy Book Club - The Universe Within: Discovering the Common History of Rocks\, Planets and People\, by Neil Shubin
DESCRIPTION:In his last book\, Neil Shubin delved into the amazing connections between human anatomy—our hands\, our jaws—and the structures in the fish that first took over land 375 million years ago. Now\, with his trademark clarity and exuberance\, he takes an even more expansive approach to the question of why we are the way we are. Starting once again with fossils\, Shubin turns his gaze skyward.  He shows how the entirety of the universe’s 14-billion-year history can be seen in our bodies. From our very molecular composition (a result of stellar events at the origin of our solar system)\, he makes clear\, through the working of our eyes\, how the evolution of the cosmos has had profound effects on the development of human life on earth. (goodreads.com) \nPlease note that there are several books with the title The Universe Within. Be careful to pick up the one written by Neil Shubin! \nThis group is dedicated to providing a friendly\, free-thinking environment in which to discuss books that inspire rewarding conversation on subjects related to science and philosophy. Meetings take place every two months\, on the fourth Monday of the month. All meetings will take place at Scallywags Pub\, 11 St Clair Ave W\, unless otherwise indicated. There is a $4 Recommended Donation.

SUMMARY:Okanagan - Kids for Inquiry Summer Special: The Bug Guys (and Reptiles too)!
DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin CFI Okanagan’s Kids for Inquiry and The Bug Guys for a special summer event! We will learn all about some amazing bugs and reptiles! You will also have an opportunity after the presentation to meet some of the animals up close and personal! Are you brave enough to touch a ball python? Or what about holding Tina the bearded dragon? \nSpace is very limited\, so we highly recommend getting tickets in advance. Tickets are free\, with a suggested $5 donation per child. If there is space\, tickets will also be available at the door. RSVPs on Facebook and Meetup do not guarantee a ticket. Please get tickets at Eventbrite: \nwww.kfibugguys.eventbrite.ca \nYour donations help to cover our costs and are very much appreciated! \n“The Bug Guys” is a small non-profit organization committed to educating young people and people young at heart about the world’s most misunderstood creatures; insects\, arachnids and of course reptiles. Stuart Brown (The Bug Guy) has always had a love for almost anything creepy crawly and could never understand why so many people hate them until he realized it was simply because people never really got to know them properly\, and so with each presentation a few more kids and adults learn to love some of the most “unlovable” critters as much as Stuart does. \nIn the presentation you will meet some of Stuart’s private collection and pets and enjoy hands on experience with some of his very friendly lizards and snakes. You will learn about each species relationship with other animals in its family\, the natural history and behavior of the species and their role in the pet trade\, as well as the care of the animals and whether they make good pets or not. The main goal of every presentation is put myths about these wonderful animals to rest and hopefully putting aside a few phobias so the animals can be appreciated for what they truly are; nothing short of amazing! \nAfter we’ve said goodbye to Stuart and the animals\, please join Kids for Inquiry outside for a family picnic (bring your own food!). \nTo keep up with future Kids for Inquiry events\, please join our Meetup group: http://www.meetup.com/Kids-for-Inquiry-Okanagan/

SUMMARY:Okanagan - Kids for Inquiry: Chiller
DESCRIPTION:Dr Janice Snyder\, professor of psychology at UBC-Okanagan\, will give a presentation on the science of attention and focus. (If you haven’t already done so\, don’t tell your kids about the gorilla in the basketball game!)\nShe will then lead the kids in a guided meditation\, practising the art of attention\, as well as relaxation. \nThis activity can contribute to your child’s “Chiller” patch at DIY.org.https://diy.org/skills/chiller \nBecause this event involves a presentation and meditation\, it is recommended for kids age 8 and older. If your child is unable to be fairly still and quiet\, please take them to the park rather than to this KFI gathering. 😉 \nEach child should bring a comfy cushion to sit on! \nMore details to follow. \nThe RSVP list on Meetup will be taken as definitive: \nhttp://www.meetup.com/Kids-for-Inquiry-Okanagan/events/186927682/?a=ea1_grp&rv=ea1&_af_eid=186927682&_af=event

SUMMARY:Okanagan - Kids for Inquiry: Chemist
DESCRIPTION:Chemistry is the driving force inside batteries and they can be made out of a variety of different ingredients. At this KFI gathering\, the kids will be making batteries out of pennies! \nWe will have plenty of pennies\, but if you have any pennies lying around\, please do bring them along and put them to good use. 🙂 \nCan you make a battery that will light an LED? Does it make a difference how many pennies you use? Why? Test your battery and see if it can power other items you bring from home. (Bring small things that take one or two AA batteries and let’s test them out!) \nThis project can count towards the Chemist patch on DIY.org:https://diy.org/skills/chemist/challenges/360/light-an-led-with-a-homemade-battery \nYounger kids will definitely need help with this project\, so parents should stay to help. Older kids may be dropped off; please sign them in and leave a phone number so you can be contacted. Thanks! \nPlease RSVP on Meetup: \nhttp://www.meetup.com/Kids-for-Inquiry-Okanagan/events/181285292/ \n(That list of RSVPs will be taken as the definitive list\, not the Facebook RSVPs.) \nThis event is free\, but donations to cover costs are very welcome. 🙂

SUMMARY:TORONTO: Science and Philosophy Book Club - Consciousness Explained\, by Daniel Dennett
DESCRIPTION:Join guest host\, Heider Alward for a discussion on Daniel Dennett’s Consciousness Explained. \nConsciousness Explained is a book from 1991 by the American philosopher Daniel Dennett which offers an account of how consciousness arises from interaction of physical and cognitive processes in the brain. This book can be read with genuine pleasure by a non-philosopher; anyone who picks it up will be swept up in the excitement of Dennett’s project. Even a reader who has never looked into a psychology book\, or taken an interest in computers\, will find herself absorbed in summaries of interesting psychological and physiological experiments\, and in brief but clear accounts of curious computer programs. Dennett integrates all these into the development of his ‘Multiple Drafts’ model of consciousness with great skill\, and moves smoothly back and forth between laboratory results and philosophical generalizations. \n  \nThis group is dedicated to providing a friendly\, free-thinking environment in which to discuss books that inspire rewarding conversation on subjects related to science and philosophy. Meetings take place every two months\, on the fourth Monday of the month. All meetings will take place at Scallywags Pub\, 11 St Clair Ave W\, unless otherwise indicated. SUMMARY:Okanagan - Kids for Inquiry: Ornithologist
DESCRIPTION:  \nI know it’s 9am on a Sunday morning! But the birds will be busy at that time of day\, so it’s a good time to go watch them. \nWe will meet at the entrance to the Rotary Marsh Bird Sanctuary on Sunset Drive\, downtown Kelowna. We will be joined by experts from the Central Okanagan Naturalists Club and the Young Naturalists to look for birds and try to identify some of them. Kids should bring cameras and/or binoculars\, if they have them. Sketch books might be nice for kids who like to draw. \nThis event is designed for kids between 6 and 12 years old. Parents should stay with younger children. Older children may be dropped off\, but parents are welcome to stay. \nAt 10am\, we will walk over the the Rotary Centre to dissect owl pellets! Can you find evidence of what owls eat by investigating one of their regurgitated pellets? \nKids need to bring rubber gloves and tweezers\, paper/notebooks and pencils. Magnifying glasses would be great too! If they bring plain paper and they have a camera\, they can take nice photos of the bones they find in the pellets. \nIf the kids would like\, these activities can contribute towards the Ornithologist patch at DIY.org: \nhttp://diy.org/skills/ornithologist \nYou can find out more about KFI and DIY.org at our website:http://cfiokanagan.ca/kids-for-inquiry.html \nThis event is free\, but a donation would be very much appreciated to cover the cost of the room rental. \nPlease RSVP at the event page on Facebook.

SUMMARY:The Science of Shakespeare - A Talk by Dan Falk
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, May 16\, CFI Toronto will be hosting a talk by Dan Falk\, author of The Science of Shakespeare: a New Look at the Playwright’s Universe. Falk’s Talk provides highlights from his book\, now available on Goose Lane Editions. \n \nThe Science of Shakespeare explores the connections between Shakespeare’s novel observations of human nature and the larger scientific revolution that was just then getting underway. Falk argues that the legendary playwright was well aware of the changes in the air\, and that he played an important and overlooked role in ushering in a more “modern” way of thinking. \nGeneral admission is $15\, or $10 for CFI members. Click here for tickets and other admission options. \nFalk is a science journalist\, author\, and broadcaster. His books include In Search of Time: Journeys along a Curious Dimension and Universe on a T-Shirt: The Quest for the Theory of Everything\, winner of the 2002 Science in Society Journalism Award. He has written for the Globe and Mail\, the Toronto Star\, The Walrus\, Astronomy\, Sky & Telescope\, and New Scientist; he has also been a regular contributor to CBC Radio’s Ideas. Falk recently completed a prestigious Knight Journalism Fellowship at MIT\, where he undertook much of the research for this book.
