SUMMARY:CFIC - Science & Philosophy Book Club - "Waking Up: A Guide to Spirituality Without Religion" by Sam Harris
DESCRIPTION:This group is hosted by CFI Canada members Christine Gagnon and Vlad Bunea at our National Headquarters\, 55 Eglinton Ave E.\, Suite 307\, Buzzer Code 49\, from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. Suggested donation is $5. There is an after-event at a location near the office. \nThe goal is to provide a friendly\, free-thinking environment in which to discuss books that inspire rewarding conversation on subjects related to science and philosophy. \n \nFor the millions of Americans who say they want spirituality without religion\, Sam Harris says his new book is a guide to meditation as a rational spiritual practice informed by neuroscience and psychology. \nFrom multiple New York Times bestselling author\, neuroscientist\, and “New Atheist” Sam Harris\, Waking Up is for the 30 percent of Americans who follow no religion\, but who suspect that Jesus\, Buddha\, Lao Tzu\, Rumi\, and the other saints and sages of history could not have all been epileptics\, schizophrenics\, or frauds. Throughout the book\, Harris argues that there are important “truths” to be found in the experiences of such contemplatives—and\, therefore\, that there is more to understanding reality than science and secular culture generally allow. \n Waking Up is part seeker’s memoir and part exploration of the scientific underpinnings of spirituality. No other book marries contemplative wisdom and modern science in this way\, and no author other than Sam Harris—a scientist\, philosopher\, and famous skeptic—could write it.

SUMMARY:CFI Calgary Movie Night "Silence of The Labs" + Special Guest
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe CBC documentary “Silence of the Labs” investigates the changing landscape of public funding for scientific research and its relationship to public policy. Scientists across the country are expressing growing alarm that federal cutbacks to research programs monitoring areas that range from climate change and ocean habitats to public health will deprive Canadians of crucial information. This is a must see documentary that raises important issues about public-interest science and the state of our democracy. \nIn the past five years the federal government has dismissed more than 2\,000 scientists\, and hundreds of programs and world-renowned research facilities have lost their funding. Programs that monitored things such as smoke stack emissions\, food inspections\, oil spills\, water quality and climate change have been drastically cut or shut down. \nFollowing the documentary we will be joined by Dr. Randy Tyson\, a Canadian Scientist who will enlighten us with his experiences with the federal government’s cutbacks to Canadian Science programs.

SUMMARY:Okanagan - After the dinosaurs: Extraordinary rates of erosion and how they created the Canadian landscape
DESCRIPTION:  \nCFI Okanagan is collaborating with the Okanagan Jewish Community Centre for this event. \nThis presentation marks a departure from Dr Robert Young’s usual work in that it addresses processes and time\nspans much larger than his Ice Age studies. It is important because it addresses the mechanisms and timing of processes responsible for leaving Canada the way we see it today. The journey is surprising and the inferences enormous\, and of interest to anyone who wishes to understand how this part of the natural world acts. \nDr Young became attracted to an academic life after being bitten by a bug called “Earth Surface Processes”. Having completed his B.Sc. and M.Sc. at the University of Alberta\, and a Ph.D. at the University of Calgary\, he has ended up at UBC’s Okanagan campus. Throughout his academic career\, Dr. Young has worked on a number interesting projects\, collaborating with Ice Age Palaeontologists. \nThis event is free.

SUMMARY:CFI Toronto - Science & Philosophy Book Club - "A Universe from Nothing" by Lawrence M. Krauss
\nThis month we look at Lawrence Krauss’ book that tries to offer a paradigm-shifting view of how everything that exists came to be in the first place. \n“Where did the universe come from? What was there before it? What will the future bring? And finally\, why is there something rather than nothing?” \nReviews were mixed. Philosopher of science and physicist David Albert\, in a review for The New York Times\, said the book failed to live up to its title\, and he criticized Krauss for dismissing concerns about his use of the term nothing to refer to a quantum vacuum instead of a “philosopher’s or theologian’s idealized ‘nothing'” (i.e. instead of having the meaning “not anything”).[5] \nCommenting on the philosophical debate sparked by (and largely ignored in) the book\, physicist Sean M. Carroll asks “Do advances in modern physics and cosmology help us address these underlying questions\, of why there is something called the universe at all\, and why there are things called “the laws of physics\,” and why those laws seem to take the form of quantum mechanics\, and why some particular wave function is Hamiltonian? In a word: no. I don’t see how they could.” \nPhysicist George F. R. Ellis\, who is an active Quaker and winner of the infamous Templeton Prize (awarded to a living person who\, in the estimation of the judges\, “has made an exceptional contribution to affirming life’s spiritual dimension\,”) when asked whether Krauss has “solved the mystery of why there is something rather than nothing\,” notes that the “belief that all of reality can be fully comprehended in terms of physics and the equations of physics is a fantasy . . . Krauss does not address why the laws of physics exist\, why they have the form they have\, or in what kind of manifestation they existed before the universe existed (which he must believe if he believes they brought the universe into existence).” \n

SUMMARY:Okanagan - Silence of the Labs
DESCRIPTION:Screening of the CBC documentary\, Silence of the Labs. \nThis is a collaborative effort between CFI Okanagan and Evidence for Democracy. http://evidencefordemocracy.ca/ \n“In recent years\, federal funding for science has decreased drastically. Because of these cutbacks\, many federal research programs have been scaled back or shut down completely\, including important programs that monitor air quality and ocean contaminants. This lack of monitoring and collection of crucial information prevents us from understanding our world and adapting to it when it changes. It also creates a gap in evidence that will impact public policy decisions for many years to come. This research is essential for protecting our health\, safety and the environment. \nThe CBC documentary Silence of the Labs investigates this changing landscape of public funding for scientific research and its relationship to public policy. The documentary highlights perspectives from the scientific community and the impact of government research funding decisions on all Canadians. \nThis is a must see documentary that raises important issues about public-interest science and the state of our democracy.” \nhttp://www.pipsc.ca/portal/page/portal/website/issues/science/vanishingscience \nhttp://www.cbc.ca/fifth/blog/federal-programs-and-research-facilities-that-have-been-shut-down-or-had-th \nJoin CFI and Evidence for Democracy in the boardroom at the Rotary Centre to see this documentary. \nFree. Donations will be gratefully accepted. \nThere will be time for discussion afterwards.
