SUMMARY:John Rawls's Theory of Justice (Saskatoon)
DESCRIPTION:John Rawls’s A Theory of Justice was one of the most important and controversial books in philosophy of the second half of the Twentieth Century. \n \n \nFor this month’s meet up\, we are hosting a talk / discussion on Rawls’s theory\, given to us by Will Buschert\, of the UofS Philosophy and Political Science departments. \nRawls’s theory of justice revolves around the adaptation of two fundamental principles of justice which would\, in turn\, guarantee a just and morally acceptable society. The first principle guarantees the right of each person to have the most extensive basic liberty compatible with the liberty of others. The second principle states that social and economic positions are to be (a) to everyone’s advantage and (b) open to all. \nA key problem for Rawls is to show how such principles would be universally adopted\, and here the work borders on general ethical issues. He introduces a theoretical “veil of ignorance” in which all the “players” in the social game would be placed in a situation which is called the “original position.” Having only a general knowledge about the facts of “life and society\,” each player is to make a “rationally prudential choice” concerning the kind of social institution they would enter into contract with. By denying the players any specific information about themselves it forces them to adopt a generalized point of view that bears a strong resemblance to the moral point of view. “Moral conclusions can be reached without abandoning the prudential standpoint and positing a moral outlook merely by pursuing one’s own prudential reasoning under certain procedural bargaining and knowledge constraints.”

SUMMARY:Presentation of the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization (Saskatoon)
DESCRIPTION:For this month’s meet up\, we have a presentation by Paul Hodgson\, spokesperson for the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization\, located at the University of Saskatchewan. \nThe title of Paul’s talk will be \nEmerging infectious diseases: Real world ‘Contagion’ or media hype? \nThe ‘Contagion’ in the title refers to the recent movie\, starring Jude Law and Kate Winslet. As it happens\, the film was inspired by events such as the SARS crisis and attempts an accurate depiction of the outbreak\, spread and attempts to control a new contagious disease. Thus\, it might make good homework to watch the film before the meetup.

SUMMARY:God loves Uganda - Movie showing + panel
DESCRIPTION:GOD LOVES UGANDA \nWith God Loves Uganda\, Academy Award-winning filmmaker Roger Ross Williams (Music by Prudence) explores the role of the American Evangelical movement in fueling Uganda’s terrifying turn towards biblical law and the proposed death penalty for homosexuality. Thanks to charismatic religious leaders and a well-financed campaign\, these draconian new laws and the politicians that peddle them are winning over the Ugandan public. But these dangerous policies and the money that fuels them aren’t coming from Africa; they’re being imported from some of America’s largest megachurches. \nUsing vérité\, interviews\, and hidden camera footage\, the film allows American religious leaders and their young missionaries that make up the “front lines in a battle for billions of souls” to explain their positions in their own words. Shocking and enlightening\, touching and horrifying\, God Loves Uganda is a searing look at the role of American evangelical missionaries in the persecution of gay Africans. \n \n  \nJoin CFI Toronto for a screening followed by short conversation on the current situation and what we can do\, featuring: \nAndrea Houston – Journalist from XTRA!\nJohn Nicolas – Pride Uganda \nHot Docs Bloor Cinema\, 506 Bloor St. W\, Toronto\nThu\, Nov 28 6:30 PM\nTickets $11\nClick here to buy now \n  \n

SUMMARY:Movie Night: Life of Brian
DESCRIPTION:Monty Python’s The Life of Brian is a classic movie! It follows Brian\, who is born on the original Christmas\, in the stable next door. He then spends the rest of his life being mistaken for a messiah. Think of the song “Always look on the bright side of life\, doo doo….”. That comes from this movie! \n \nIt’s going to be a casual family friendly environment similar to the the great success we had with our Carl Sagan Day event. Relax on comfortable couches at Ten Nightclub as we project the movie. Hang out with friends and meet new friends in our Skeptical/Atheist/Humanist group! \nMovie night is back and will be a regular monthly event for CFI Calgary. If you have ideas for future movies or documentaries that you think our community would enjoy\, let us know in the comments. \nVisit our Facebook Event page.

SUMMARY:Toronto SOS Group
DESCRIPTION:Secular Organizations for Sobriety\nSOS Group of Toronto is a social services organization of CFI Canada which launched in June 2007. A network of autonomous addiction recovery groups\, the program stresses the need to place the highest priority on sobriety and uses mutual support to assist members in achieving this goal. \nSOS recognizes genetic and environmental factors contributing to addiction\, but allows each member to decide whether or not alcoholism is a disease. SOS holds the view that alcoholics can recover (addictive behaviors can be arrested)\, but that ultimately it is never cured; relapse is always possible. SOS does not endorse sponsor/sponsee relationships.\n \nThe SOS program is based on the Suggested Guidelines for Sobriety\, that emphasize the “sobriety priority.” In order to change\, members must make abstinence their top priority; not drinking despite changing conditions in their lives. SOS suggests members follow a daily\, three part\, Cycle of Sobriety: acknowledgment of their addiction\, acceptance of their addictions and prioritization of maintaining sobriety. Members are also encouraged to develop strategies or aphorisms that strengthen their resolve to maintain sobriety on what SOS teaches \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Lying to Children - Saskatoon
DESCRIPTION:Our December meetup will be in the evening at 6:30pm to allow for more of relaxed party atmosphere. This year\, we will discuss the issue of lying to children about Santa and related figures. Are there benefits to telling children these figures are real and having them figure out on their own that they are pretend? Should you always be honest with your kids – or at least about these myths? \nSome related links: \nIs the Easter Bunny a fraud? Does Santa make kids gullible? \nDebunking Santa Is Just Practice for God \nThe Santa Claus Lie Debate: Answering Objections \nShould Parents Perpetuate the Santa Claus Myth? \nGift exchange: We are planning a simple gift exchange of used books or other items. Please do not purchase anything new for this event. Wrap your gift and bring it to the meetup for exchange. Everyone will select a gift to open and then you are free to exchange with others. Let Brandon know if you are unable to bring a gift. \nDonations to Kiva: We have had a Kiva loans fund for a few years. Kiva is a program for providing funds for micro-loans – mostly to people in developing countries. We currently have $360.12 and have helped fund loans for 72 different entrepreneurs. Our number of loans and dollar amount of loans count toward the Atheists\, Agnostics\, Skeptics\, Freethinkers\, Secular Humanists and the Non-Religious team. If anyone would like to contribute new funds to our account\, we will collect those at this meetup. \nIf you would also/instead like to make a year-end donation to CFI\, we can accept that at the meetup or you can donate online here.

SUMMARY:Lecture by Peter Boghossian author of A Manual for Creating Atheists
DESCRIPTION:HOW TO CONVERT BELIEVERS INTO ATHEISTS: CONTROVERSIAL PHILOSOPHER TO TEACH HIS METHOD OF DECONVERSION DURING PUBLIC LECTURE IN CALGARY \nDr. Peter Boghossian\, Author of “A Manual for Creating Atheists”\, will be speaking at Ten Nightclub on Sunday\, January 19 in Calgary\, Alberta. His book\, released on November 1\, 2013 is already a best seller in the categories of Philosophy\, Religious Studies\, and Spirituality on Amazon.com. Dr. Peter Boghossian is a Philosophy Professor at Protland State University and is a sought out speaker at major Skeptical\, Humanist and Atheist Conferences and Conventions. \nWhen asked what his goal was in writing “A Manual for Creating Atheists”\, he responded\, “My goal is literally to create a legion of people who go out wherever the faithful are found and in every interaction to help them come to reason and shed superstition\, irrationality and faith. That’s my goal. Literally to create a legion of people that will stop the tide of irrationality.” \nAmazon’s description of “A Manual for Creating Atheists”: \nFor thousands of years\, the faithful have honed proselytizing strategies and talked people into believing the truth of one holy book or another. Indeed\, the faithful often view converting others as an obligation of their faith–and are trained from an early age to spread their unique brand of religion. The result is a world broken in large part by unquestioned faith. As an urgently needed counter to this tried-and-true tradition of religious evangelism\, A Manual for Creating Atheists offers the first-ever guide not for talking people into faith–but for talking them out of it. Peter Boghossian draws on the tools he has developed and used for more than twenty years as a philosopher and educator to teach how to engage the faithful in conversations that will help them value reason and rationality\, cast doubt on their religious beliefs\, mistrust their faith\, abandon superstition and irrationality\, and ultimately embrace reason. \nDoors open at 2pm. Lecture starts at 3pm.

SUMMARY:Annual General Meeting (Saskatoon)
DESCRIPTION:This will be our 5th Annual General Meeting (AGM) at which we’ll review 2013 and get feedback from members on future plans. We’ll also be welcoming the 2014 council members who will be elected prior to the meeting. \nHere are some of the topics of discussion\, especially useful for those who cannot attend – anything you’d like to add? \nWe are always looking for new ideas for regular meetup topics and for special events. With limited resources on council\, we aren’t able to take on all the good ideas\, but we offer support for initiatives that members want to lead. Tell us your ideas and let us know if your willing to spearhead something! \nDarwin Day is coming up (Feb 12) and this will be the 6th year in Saskatoon. We need volunteers for the event committee to help prepare for and execute the event. Let us know if you’re available for this or future events. A major task is putting up posters and then we need a few people for set-up\, greeting\, and clean-up. Also let us know if you’re interested in creating a poster for this or a future event. \nWe have an account with Kiva\, which provides microloans to lower income entrepreneurs. You are welcome to add to the fund at any time. As money is paid back\, we re-lend it to different people. At our December meetup\, we received $125 to add to the Kiva fund – yeah! \nWe are Partners for Life with Canadian Blood Services and we’ve pledged 30 donations for 2014. If you can donate blood\, tell them you’re part of our group with the partner number SASK010719. In the past we have done one group donation on the first Thursday in May for the Day of Reason\, but the turnout was very poor the last 2 years. Do you have an idea of how we can get more members to donate? Some members donate as often as they can – usually eligible every 56 days. \nWithout your support\, the Centre for Inquiry cannot continue our work. We encourage you to donate or join as a Friend of the Centre today. CFI is a nationally registered educational charity and all donations over $20 are eligible for a tax receipt. When donating online\, you can add a comment that you would like the funds to remain in Saskatchewan\, if you wish. We are currently collecting funds for local advertising. You can also join or donate in person at one of our events and you can send cheques to the following address: \nCentre for Inquiry Saskatchewan\nBox 31043 RPO Broadway & Taylor\nSaskatoon\, SK\, S7H 5S8

SUMMARY:TORONTO: Science and Philosophy Book Club - The Structure of Scientific Revolutions by Thomas S. Kuhn
DESCRIPTION:This group is dedicated to providing a friendly\, free-thinking environment in which to discuss books that inspire rewarding conversation on subjects related to science and philosophy. \nThe Structure of Scientific Revolutions \nBy Thomas S. Kuhn & Ian Hacking \nThe Structure of Scientific Revolutions\, was first published in 1962\, it was a landmark event in the history and philosophy of science. Fifty years later\, it still has many lessons to teach. \nWith The Structure of Scientific Revolutions\, Kuhn challenged long-standing linear notions of scientific progress\, arguing that transformative ideas don’t arise from the day-to-day\, gradual process of experimentation and data accumulation but that the revolutions in science\, those breakthrough moments that disrupt accepted thinking and offer unanticipated ideas\, occur outside of “normal science\,” as he called it. Though Kuhn was writing when physics ruled the sciences\, his ideas on how scientific revolutions bring order to the anomalies that amass over time in research experiments are still instructive in our biotech age. \n(excerpt from the Toronto Public Library) \nWhen: Monday January 27th\, 7pm \nWhere: Scallywags\, 11 St Clair Ave W \nHow Much: $4 Recommended Donation

SUMMARY:Creationism Vs Evolution Debate - Part 1 Event
DESCRIPTION:Bill Nye The Science Guy Vs Ken Ham. This debate is taking place at the Creation Museum. We will have a live feed of the debate at Ten Nightclub. The debate starts at 5 PM and doors will open at 4:30. Yes it is early\, but join us when you can. \nFollowing the debate\, we will move 2 blocks to The Pig and Duke for our regular Skeptics in The Pub. Who knows what we will talk about there… \nShould Bill Nye debate a creationist and give that view any credibility? Most people are saying no. Will this change any minds? Probably not. Am I interested in seeing this potential train wreck and will be yelling at the screen at the stupidity of arguments that will be taken seriously? Most likely. \nBill Nye created a YouTube video in 2012 taking aim at creationism and explained why evolution denial is detrimental to society. He is now the most well-known public intellectual fighting for Science. \n \nThis event is held at a licensed Night Club. All attendees must have valid government issued ID due to Alberta Liquor and Gaming Laws. There are no exceptions.   \nFor more information\, see the official meet-up event page.

SUMMARY:2014 Darwin Day Celebration!
DESCRIPTION:February 12th is the birthday of Charles Darwin\, and “Darwin Day” is a global celebration of science and reason. This will be the 6th celebration in Saskatoon and the 4th year that the Saskatchewan Minister of Education has recognised February 12 as Darwin Day in Saskatchewan! \nThe University of Saskatchewan Freethought Alliance\, Saskatoon Skeptics and Centre for Inquiry Saskatchewan are proud to host the annual Darwin Day celebration in Saskatoon on February 12 at 7pm. \nCome and help us celebrate Darwin’s 205th birthday with a presentation followed by a discussion. Our speaker this year is U of S Dept of Anatomy and Cell Biology Professor Julia Boughner: \nSurvival of the…Happiest? The evolutionary use of happiness\, Darwin-style \nHuman culture is arguably as important as human biology for our species’ survival and success. In an age when a lot of us have more resources than our ancestors ever did\, many of us still find it difficult if not impossible to be happy. Based on Darwin’s own suggestion that “the vigorous\, the healthy\, and the happy survive and multiply” this talk explores the evolutionary benefits of happiness in the 21st century. \nBirthday cake and coffee will be available in the foyer following the event. Note that no food or drink is permitted in the theatre. \nSchedule of Events (subject to change): \n6:30 pm Doors open \n7:00 pm Introduction & Presentation \n8:30 pm Birthday Cake & Coffee \n9:30 pm Pub Discussion (anyone interested can join us for further discussion & cheer – at nearby The Woods Ale House) \nYou are welcome to attend all or any part of the event. \nDonations are welcome and appreciated. Suggested donation: $10 (not required).
