SUMMARY:Agri - Culture: What is the role of social sciences and humanities in science?
DESCRIPTION:Peter Anderson\, a historical and cultural geographer of science\, will discuss how his research on the history of Ottawa’s Central Experimental Farm relates to ongoing efforts to protect and expand Agriculture Canada’s scientific capacity at the Farm. An active member of the Coalition to Protect the Farm\, Pete places the research at the farm in its historic and cultural context\, arguing for the importance of continuing research at the Farm by highlighting past successes. He also applies the lessons of environmental history and science & technologies studies to support agricultural science against the lingering effects of the last decade’s science wars\, emphasizing the importance of basic and applied government research in a time of changing climates. \nThe Coalition to Protect the Farm is a community organization dedicated to protecting the Central Experimental Farm (CEF) in Ottawa\, Ontario\, Canada. \nFounded in 1886\, the Central Experimental Farm is one of the longest running agricultural research facilities in the world. In 2014 MP John Baird announced that 60 acres of land from the Central Experimental Farm would be leased to the Ottawa Hospital for a new campus for the Civic Hospital. \nMeetup Signup Page

SUMMARY:Your Deceptive Mind: A Scientific Guide to Critical Thinking Skills
DESCRIPTION:Many people are familiar with Steve Novella\, as host of the Skeptics Guide to the Universe\, blogger at Science-Based Medicine\, or just all-round goto guy for scientific skepticism. \nBut you may not know that Novella has created a video course in critical thinking offered by The Great Courses. \nHere’s a summary: \nWhat should you think? Who should you believe? Could you be deceiving yourself? These are questions that all critical thinkers of any age must constantly ask themselves. There is no more important skill in today’s world than being able to think about\, understand\, and act on information in a way that is both effective and responsible. Critical thinking transforms you from a passive member of society into an active participant in the ideas and issues of the day. It empowers you to better understand nearly every single aspect of everyday life\, from health and nutrition to science and technology to philosophical and spiritual belief systems. \nEveryone is welcome to join us to view the lectures and join in lively followup discussion. There are 24 lectures and we will be viewing 2 per session. \nPlease be sure to sign up on Meetup for this event! http://www.meetup.com/CFI-ottawa/events/226615661/

SUMMARY:Okanagan - What We Are Really and the NeoDarwinian Renaissance
DESCRIPTION:  \nDinner at 5:30pm. Presentation starts at 7pm. \nLocal naturalist\, Jorma Jykkanen (BSc Zoology\, PDP)\, will be giving us a whirlwind tour from the science of the Big Bang\, through the origins of life\, and history of evolution to the present day. He recommends the following site for background on evolution: http://evolution.berkeley.edu/ \nJorma says he began his naturalist life as a boy in grade 6 studying stuffed birds behind a glass case at Rockwood Schooll\, Winnipeg. He went on into falconry and later went to university to study nature. He is a UBC trained Zoologist having studied evolution\, comparative anatomy of the vertebrates and entomology under Dr. Scudder at UBC. He also obtained a PDP from SFU with a focus in Environmental Education. SUMMARY:TORONTO: Science and Philosophy Book Club - The Universe Within: Discovering the Common History of Rocks\, Planets and People\, by Neil Shubin
DESCRIPTION:In his last book\, Neil Shubin delved into the amazing connections between human anatomy—our hands\, our jaws—and the structures in the fish that first took over land 375 million years ago. Now\, with his trademark clarity and exuberance\, he takes an even more expansive approach to the question of why we are the way we are. Starting once again with fossils\, Shubin turns his gaze skyward.  He shows how the entirety of the universe’s 14-billion-year history can be seen in our bodies. From our very molecular composition (a result of stellar events at the origin of our solar system)\, he makes clear\, through the working of our eyes\, how the evolution of the cosmos has had profound effects on the development of human life on earth. (goodreads.com) \nPlease note that there are several books with the title The Universe Within. Be careful to pick up the one written by Neil Shubin! \nThis group is dedicated to providing a friendly\, free-thinking environment in which to discuss books that inspire rewarding conversation on subjects related to science and philosophy. Meetings take place every two months\, on the fourth Monday of the month. All meetings will take place at Scallywags Pub\, 11 St Clair Ave W\, unless otherwise indicated. SUMMARY:TORONTO: Science and Philosophy Book Club - Consciousness Explained\, by Daniel Dennett
DESCRIPTION:Join guest host\, Heider Alward for a discussion on Daniel Dennett’s Consciousness Explained. \nConsciousness Explained is a book from 1991 by the American philosopher Daniel Dennett which offers an account of how consciousness arises from interaction of physical and cognitive processes in the brain. This book can be read with genuine pleasure by a non-philosopher; anyone who picks it up will be swept up in the excitement of Dennett’s project. Even a reader who has never looked into a psychology book\, or taken an interest in computers\, will find herself absorbed in summaries of interesting psychological and physiological experiments\, and in brief but clear accounts of curious computer programs. Dennett integrates all these into the development of his ‘Multiple Drafts’ model of consciousness with great skill\, and moves smoothly back and forth between laboratory results and philosophical generalizations. \n  \nThis group is dedicated to providing a friendly\, free-thinking environment in which to discuss books that inspire rewarding conversation on subjects related to science and philosophy. Meetings take place every two months\, on the fourth Monday of the month. All meetings will take place at Scallywags Pub\, 11 St Clair Ave W\, unless otherwise indicated. SUMMARY:The Science of Shakespeare - A Talk by Dan Falk
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, May 16\, CFI Toronto will be hosting a talk by Dan Falk\, author of The Science of Shakespeare: a New Look at the Playwright’s Universe. Falk’s Talk provides highlights from his book\, now available on Goose Lane Editions. \n \nThe Science of Shakespeare explores the connections between Shakespeare’s novel observations of human nature and the larger scientific revolution that was just then getting underway. Falk argues that the legendary playwright was well aware of the changes in the air\, and that he played an important and overlooked role in ushering in a more “modern” way of thinking. \nGeneral admission is $15\, or $10 for CFI members. Click here for tickets and other admission options. \nFalk is a science journalist\, author\, and broadcaster. His books include In Search of Time: Journeys along a Curious Dimension and Universe on a T-Shirt: The Quest for the Theory of Everything\, winner of the 2002 Science in Society Journalism Award. He has written for the Globe and Mail\, the Toronto Star\, The Walrus\, Astronomy\, Sky & Telescope\, and New Scientist; he has also been a regular contributor to CBC Radio’s Ideas. Falk recently completed a prestigious Knight Journalism Fellowship at MIT\, where he undertook much of the research for this book.
