SUMMARY:TORONTO: Science and Philosophy Book Club - The Universe Within: Discovering the Common History of Rocks\, Planets and People\, by Neil Shubin
DESCRIPTION:In his last book\, Neil Shubin delved into the amazing connections between human anatomy—our hands\, our jaws—and the structures in the fish that first took over land 375 million years ago. Now\, with his trademark clarity and exuberance\, he takes an even more expansive approach to the question of why we are the way we are. Starting once again with fossils\, Shubin turns his gaze skyward.  He shows how the entirety of the universe’s 14-billion-year history can be seen in our bodies. From our very molecular composition (a result of stellar events at the origin of our solar system)\, he makes clear\, through the working of our eyes\, how the evolution of the cosmos has had profound effects on the development of human life on earth. (goodreads.com) \nPlease note that there are several books with the title The Universe Within. Be careful to pick up the one written by Neil Shubin! \nThis group is dedicated to providing a friendly\, free-thinking environment in which to discuss books that inspire rewarding conversation on subjects related to science and philosophy. Meetings take place every two months\, on the fourth Monday of the month. All meetings will take place at Scallywags Pub\, 11 St Clair Ave W\, unless otherwise indicated. There is a $4 Recommended Donation.

SUMMARY:TORONTO: Science and Philosophy Book Club - Consciousness Explained\, by Daniel Dennett
DESCRIPTION:Join guest host\, Heider Alward for a discussion on Daniel Dennett’s Consciousness Explained. \nConsciousness Explained is a book from 1991 by the American philosopher Daniel Dennett which offers an account of how consciousness arises from interaction of physical and cognitive processes in the brain. This book can be read with genuine pleasure by a non-philosopher; anyone who picks it up will be swept up in the excitement of Dennett’s project. Even a reader who has never looked into a psychology book\, or taken an interest in computers\, will find herself absorbed in summaries of interesting psychological and physiological experiments\, and in brief but clear accounts of curious computer programs. Dennett integrates all these into the development of his ‘Multiple Drafts’ model of consciousness with great skill\, and moves smoothly back and forth between laboratory results and philosophical generalizations. \n  \nThis group is dedicated to providing a friendly\, free-thinking environment in which to discuss books that inspire rewarding conversation on subjects related to science and philosophy. Meetings take place every two months\, on the fourth Monday of the month. All meetings will take place at Scallywags Pub\, 11 St Clair Ave W\, unless otherwise indicated. SUMMARY:The Science of Shakespeare - A Talk by Dan Falk
DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, May 16\, CFI Toronto will be hosting a talk by Dan Falk\, author of The Science of Shakespeare: a New Look at the Playwright’s Universe. Falk’s Talk provides highlights from his book\, now available on Goose Lane Editions. \n \nThe Science of Shakespeare explores the connections between Shakespeare’s novel observations of human nature and the larger scientific revolution that was just then getting underway. Falk argues that the legendary playwright was well aware of the changes in the air\, and that he played an important and overlooked role in ushering in a more “modern” way of thinking. \nGeneral admission is $15\, or $10 for CFI members. Click here for tickets and other admission options. \nFalk is a science journalist\, author\, and broadcaster. His books include In Search of Time: Journeys along a Curious Dimension and Universe on a T-Shirt: The Quest for the Theory of Everything\, winner of the 2002 Science in Society Journalism Award. He has written for the Globe and Mail\, the Toronto Star\, The Walrus\, Astronomy\, Sky & Telescope\, and New Scientist; he has also been a regular contributor to CBC Radio’s Ideas. Falk recently completed a prestigious Knight Journalism Fellowship at MIT\, where he undertook much of the research for this book.

SUMMARY:
DESCRIPTION:With God Loves Uganda\, Academy Award-winning filmmaker Roger Ross Williams (Music by Prudence) explores the role of the American Evangelical movement in fueling Uganda’s terrifying turn towards biblical law and the proposed death penalty for homosexuality. Thanks to charismatic religious leaders and a well-financed campaign\, these draconian new laws and the politicians that peddle them are winning over the Ugandan public. But these dangerous policies and the money that fuels them aren’t coming from Africa; they’re being imported from some of America’s largest megachurches. \nUsing vérité\, interviews\, and hidden camera footage\, the film allows American religious leaders and their young missionaries that make up the “front lines in a battle for billions of souls” to explain their positions in their own words. Shocking and enlightening\, touching and horrifying\, God Loves Uganda is a searing look at the role of American evangelical missionaries in the persecution of gay Africans. \nGOD LOVES UGANDA\nCFI Toronto screening followed by short conversation on the current situation and what we can do\, featuring: \nAndrea Houston – Journalist from XTRA!\nJohn Nicolas – Pride Uganda \nWhere? SUMMARY:Fundraising Event: Brunch\, Interview and Q & A with Dr. Jill Tarter
DESCRIPTION:Fundraising Event: Brunch\, Interview and Q & A with Dr. Jill Tarter\, Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Icon and the inspiration behind Carl Sagan’s protagonist in Contact \nThe event will consist of a catered brunch reception\, featuring an interview with Dr. Jill Tarter conducted by Justin Trottier\, CFI Spokesperson and Host of The Star Spot\, an astronomy podcast and radio show. Following the interview Dr. Tarter will be available for Q & A and conversation. \nAstronomer Jill Tarter is the holder of the Bernard M. Oliver Chair for SETI. She is one of the few researchers to have devoted her career to hunting for signs of sentient beings\, and there are few aspects of this field that have not been affected by her work. \nJill was the lead for Project Phoenix\, a decade-long SETI scrutiny of about 750 nearby star systems\, using telescopes in Australia\, West Virginia and Puerto Rico. While no clearly extraterrestrial signal was found\, this was the most comprehensive targeted search for artificially generated cosmic signals ever undertaken. Now Jill heads up the Institute’s efforts to build and operate the Allen Telescope Array\, a massive new instrument that will eventually comprise 350 antennas\, each 6 meters in diameter. This telescope will be able to enormously increase the speed\, and the spectral search range\, of the Institute’s hunt for signals. A subset of the full array will begin operations in the Fall of 2007. \nIndeed\, being as much of an icon of SETI as Jill is\, perhaps it is not surprising that the Jodie Foster character in the movie “Contact” is largely based on this real-life researcher. \n\n  \nWhen: Friday September 27th\, 3pm \nWhere: Hart House\, 7 Hart House Circle\, Debates Room (second floor)\, University of Toronto \nHow Much: $50 \nBuy tickets: cfiequinoxcelebration.eventbrite.com

SUMMARY:Cafe Skeptique: Déjà vu - Haven't we already had this discussion?
DESCRIPTION:**This Month’s Cafe Skeptique Will be Held on Saturday July 20th  at 5:00 p.m. at Free Times Cafe\, 320 College St. \nCFI Toronto’s Cafe Skeptique is a fun and fascinating discussion group that focuses on a range of topics within the realm of skepticism such as pseudo-science\, alternative medicine\, conspiracy theories\, etc. It’s open to the public and everyone is welcome to join in! \nThis month’s topic: Déjà vu – Haven’t we already had this discussion? \nDéjà vu refers to a subjective feeling that we’re reliving a past event. Paranormalists and memory researchers strongly differ in their interpretations of such experiences. We’ll consider how déjà vu illustrates concepts in human memory and perception\, and how personal experiences of déjà vu could strengthen beliefs in psychic phenomena. \nNormally held every THIRD Saturday of the month at 5:00 p.m.\, at Free Times Cafe\, 320 College St. just west of Spadina Ave. Exceptions will be posted clearly when they apply. \nWe are able to host this and many other events of its kind due to memberships and donations given by people just like you. \nCentre for Inquiry aims to foster a secular society by promoting reason\, science\, secularism and freedom of inquiry in every area of human endeavour.
