SUMMARY:Café Inquiry: Why Nuclear Power?
DESCRIPTION:Café Inquiry is a monthly casual discussion group run by CFI Vancouver. Come along and enjoy afternoon tea and stimulating discussion with fellow freethinkers on a variety of topics. \n\nIn order to be economical and useful\, a power plant must produce more energy than it costs to build and run it. This concept is known as Energy-returned-on-energy-invested\, or EROI. Careful consideration of this concept in conjunction with a rigorous skeptical eye on the numbers produced (see http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0360544213000492) seems to rule out certain popular approaches to energy production. Nuclear energy on the other hand excels from an EROI perspective but remains unpopular for a variety of other reasons. \nOur May Café will be moderated by Lars Martin. Lars is a physicist in the process of finishing up his PhD in Nuclear Astrophysics at TRIUMF. He is not directly involved in nuclear energy but generally in favour. He has voted for the Green Party before. \nCafé Inquiry is free but donations are requested to keep the program running. \n \n

DESCRIPTION:CFI Vancouver is proud to host a public forum on CFI activities. This is an opportunity to socialize with CFI volunteers and suggest ideas for events\, activism\, and policy. The meeting will be chaired by local CFI volunteers and will take questions and discuss plans with members\, the public and other volunteers. \n \nJoin us at the Tipper Restaurant at 7pm for dinner and socializing until 8pm when we will start the forum. \nThe Tipper generously gives us the back room for free so please consider buying dinner or drinks to help support their business.

DESCRIPTION:CFI Vancouver’s Book Club meets every second Saturday of the month at The Grind Coffee Shop on Main Street at King Edward. Most of the books we discuss are available through the Vancouver Public Libraries – http://www.vpl.vancouver.bc.ca/\, can be found for sale at Chapters or online at Amazon.ca \n \n \nApril’s book is: ‘The Believing Brain: From Ghosts and Gods to Politics and Conspiracies – How We Construct Beliefs and Reinforce Them as Truths’ by Michael Shermer \n— \nFrom Amazon.ca: \nSynthesizing thirty years of research\, psychologist and science historian Michael Shermer upends the traditional thinking about how humans form beliefs about the world. Simply put\, beliefs come first and explanations for beliefs follow. The brain\, Shermer argues\, is a belief engine. Using sensory data that flow in through the senses\, the brain naturally begins to look for and find patterns\, and then infuses those patterns with meaning\, forming beliefs. Once beliefs are formed the brain begins to look for and find confirmatory evidence in support of those beliefs\, accelerating the process of reinforcing them\, and round and round the process goes in a positive-feedback loop.\nIn The Believing Brain\, Shermer provides countless real-world examples of how this process operates\, from politics\, economics\, and religion to conspiracy theories\, the supernatural\, and the paranormal.
