There is an after-event at a location near the office. \nThe goal is to provide a friendly\, free-thinking environment in which to discuss books that inspire rewarding conversation on subjects related to science and philosophy. \nThis month we look at Lawrence Krauss’ book that tries to offer a paradigm-shifting view of how everything that exists came to be in the first place. \n“Where did the universe come from? What was there before it? What will the future bring? And finally\, why is there something rather than nothing?” \nReviews were mixed. Philosopher of science and physicist David Albert\, in a review for The New York Times\, said the book failed to live up to its title\, and he criticized Krauss for dismissing concerns about his use of the term nothing to refer to a quantum vacuum instead of a “philosopher’s or theologian’s idealized ‘nothing'” (i.e. instead of having the meaning “not anything”).[5] \nCommenting on the philosophical debate sparked by (and largely ignored in) the book\, physicist Sean M. Carroll asks “Do advances in modern physics and cosmology help us address these underlying questions\, of why there is something called the universe at all\, and why there are things called “the laws of physics\,” and why those laws seem to take the form of quantum mechanics\, and why some particular wave function is Hamiltonian? In a word: no. I don’t see how they could.” \nPhysicist George F. R. Ellis\, who is an active Quaker and winner of the infamous Templeton Prize (awarded to a living person who\, in the estimation of the judges\, “has made an exceptional contribution to affirming life’s spiritual dimension\,”) when asked whether Krauss has “solved the mystery of why there is something rather than nothing\,” notes that the “belief that all of reality can be fully comprehended in terms of physics and the equations of physics is a fantasy . . . Krauss does not address why the laws of physics exist\, why they have the form they have\, or in what kind of manifestation they existed before the universe existed (which he must believe if he believes they brought the universe into existence).” \n

Falk’s Talk provides highlights from his book\, now available on Goose Lane Editions. \n \nThe Science of Shakespeare explores the connections between Shakespeare’s novel observations of human nature and the larger scientific revolution that was just then getting underway. Falk argues that the legendary playwright was well aware of the changes in the air\, and that he played an important and overlooked role in ushering in a more “modern” way of thinking. \nGeneral admission is $15\, or $10 for CFI members. She is one of the few researchers to have devoted her career to hunting for signs of sentient beings\, and there are few aspects of this field that have not been affected by her work. \nJill was the lead for Project Phoenix\, a decade-long SETI scrutiny of about 750 nearby star systems\, using telescopes in Australia\, West Virginia and Puerto Rico. While no clearly extraterrestrial signal was found\, this was the most comprehensive targeted search for artificially generated cosmic signals ever undertaken. Now Jill heads up the Institute’s efforts to build and operate the Allen Telescope Array\, a massive new instrument that will eventually comprise 350 antennas\, each 6 meters in diameter. This telescope will be able to enormously increase the speed\, and the spectral search range\, of the Institute’s hunt for signals. DESCRIPTION:Canadians know that the jurors at a trial decide the defendant’s guilt or innocence according to the law of the land. What they don’t know is how far that right actually goes\,\nand what the real power of juries is. \nSometimes people — even jurors — wonder if a law or a judgment in a particular case is a just one. When the law seems wrong\, we are told there is only one solution: change the law. \nIn fact\, though\, in our legal system there is another remedy: When jurors decide that to question the fairness of applying the law in the case they are deciding may lead to a manifestly unfair and unjust result\, they have the right not to apply that law. However\, in Canada it is illegal and completely forbidden for a trial lawyer\, or even a judge to tell jurors they have this right to nullify the law. \nIn the Canadian justice system\, jurors can hand down a verdict of not guilty even if the facts pointing to guilt are clear\, even if the accused doesn’t deny the facts\, even if the judge tells the jurors to find the accused guilty. This centuries-old safeguard\, which goes along with the principle of jury independence\, has protected people’s rights and freedoms and helped sweep away laws that ordinary citizens think are outdated and unjust. \nThis power of juries is known to the legal community — but is largely unknown by the general public — until now. Gary Bauslaugh\, author of Robert Latimer\, A Story of Justice and Mercy (Lorimer\, 2010)\, learned the specifics of this matter as a result of his research around the Robert Latimer case. In his new book\, written for non-expert readers and citizens who have been summoned for jury duty\, he tells the story of jury nullification from Quaker leader William Penn to the modern-day acquittal of Henry Morgentaler\, who was charged with conducting abortions. Bauslaugh then lays out the arguments that some people make against jury independence and nullification\, and makes his own argument in favour of these safeguards.
