DESCRIPTION:Fundraising Event: Brunch\, Interview and Q & A with Dr. Jill Tarter\, Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Icon and the inspiration behind Carl Sagan’s protagonist in Contact \nThe event will consist of a catered brunch reception\, featuring an interview with Dr. Jill Tarter conducted by Justin Trottier\, CFI Spokesperson and Host of The Star Spot\, an astronomy podcast and radio show. Following the interview Dr. Tarter will be available for Q & A and conversation. \nAstronomer Jill Tarter is the holder of the Bernard M. Oliver Chair for SETI. She is one of the few researchers to have devoted her career to hunting for signs of sentient beings\, and there are few aspects of this field that have not been affected by her work. \nJill was the lead for Project Phoenix\, a decade-long SETI scrutiny of about 750 nearby star systems\, using telescopes in Australia\, West Virginia and Puerto Rico. While no clearly extraterrestrial signal was found\, this was the most comprehensive targeted search for artificially generated cosmic signals ever undertaken. Now Jill heads up the Institute’s efforts to build and operate the Allen Telescope Array\, a massive new instrument that will eventually comprise 350 antennas\, each 6 meters in diameter. This telescope will be able to enormously increase the speed\, and the spectral search range\, of the Institute’s hunt for signals. DESCRIPTION:Canadians know that the jurors at a trial decide the defendant’s guilt or innocence according to the law of the land. What they don’t know is how far that right actually goes\,\nand what the real power of juries is. \nSometimes people — even jurors — wonder if a law or a judgment in a particular case is a just one. When the law seems wrong\, we are told there is only one solution: change the law. \nIn fact\, though\, in our legal system there is another remedy: When jurors decide that to question the fairness of applying the law in the case they are deciding may lead to a manifestly unfair and unjust result\, they have the right not to apply that law. However\, in Canada it is illegal and completely forbidden for a trial lawyer\, or even a judge to tell jurors they have this right to nullify the law. \nIn the Canadian justice system\, jurors can hand down a verdict of not guilty even if the facts pointing to guilt are clear\, even if the accused doesn’t deny the facts\, even if the judge tells the jurors to find the accused guilty. This centuries-old safeguard\, which goes along with the principle of jury independence\, has protected people’s rights and freedoms and helped sweep away laws that ordinary citizens think are outdated and unjust. \nThis power of juries is known to the legal community — but is largely unknown by the general public — until now. Gary Bauslaugh\, author of Robert Latimer\, A Story of Justice and Mercy (Lorimer\, 2010)\, learned the specifics of this matter as a result of his research around the Robert Latimer case. In his new book\, written for non-expert readers and citizens who have been summoned for jury duty\, he tells the story of jury nullification from Quaker leader William Penn to the modern-day acquittal of Henry Morgentaler\, who was charged with conducting abortions. Bauslaugh then lays out the arguments that some people make against jury independence and nullification\, and makes his own argument in favour of these safeguards. SUMMARY:Moral Reasoning in a Pluralistic World
DESCRIPTION:Moral reasoning is the process we engage in when we try to figure out what is right or wrong to do and why. Moral reasoning is puzzling. On the one hand\, moral disagreement and the diversity of moral thinking suggest to some that moral reasoning is impossible or pointless. On the other hand\, almost everyone engages in such reasoning\, if only to find fault with those they disagree with. How should we reason morally in a world with varying moral outlooks\, diversity of moral views\, and substantial moral disagreement? Moral reasoning is often associated with the search for a single overarching value or principle — to be “principled” is to endorse a single value such as overall well-being\, or liberty\, and to follow a single principle based on it\, as in cost-benefit analysis or libertarianism. I argue that this approach is misguided. The proper form of moral reasoning involves finding principled compromises\, prioritizing among distinct and conflicting values — such as fairness\, honesty\, respect for autonomy — and being consistent from one case to another. It follows from this that moral disagreement and diversity do not undermine the possibility of reasoning.\n\nDr. Patricia Marino is an associate professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Waterloo. She is the current co-President of the Society for the Philosophy of Sex and Love\, and a former Humanities Fellow at Stanford University. DESCRIPTION:The theory of evolution and a re-write of US history are caught in the crosshairs when an unabashed creationist seeks re-election as\nchairman of America’s most influential board of education. \nIn Austin\, Texas\, fifteen people influence what is taught to the next generation of American children. Once every decade\, the highly politicized Texas State Board of Education rewrites the teaching and textbook standards for its nearly 5 million schoolchildren. And when it comes to textbooks\, what happens in Texas affects the nation as a whole. \nDon McLeroy\, a dentist\, Sunday school teacher\, and avowed young-earth creationist\, leads the Religious Right charge. After briefly serving on his local school board\, McLeroy was elected to the Texas State Board of Education and later appointed chairman. During his time on the board\, McLeroy has overseen the adoption of new science and history curriculum standards\, drawing national attention and placing Texas on the front line of the so-called “culture wars.” \nIn his last term\, McLeroy\, aided by Cynthia Dunbar\, an attorney from Houston and professor of Law at Jerry Falwell’s Liberty University\, finds himself not only fighting to change what Americans are taught\, but also fighting to retain his seat on the board. Challenged by Kathy Miller\, president of the Texas Freedom Network\, and Ron Wetherington\, an anthropology professor from Southern Methodist University in Texas\, McLeroy faces his toughest term yet. \nTHE REVISIONARIES follows the rise and fall of some of the most controversial figures in American education through some of their most tumultuous intellectual battles.
