SUMMARY:John Rawls's Theory of Justice (Saskatoon)
DESCRIPTION:John Rawls’s A Theory of Justice was one of the most important and controversial books in philosophy of the second half of the Twentieth Century. \n \n \nFor this month’s meet up\, we are hosting a talk / discussion on Rawls’s theory\, given to us by Will Buschert\, of the UofS Philosophy and Political Science departments. \nRawls’s theory of justice revolves around the adaptation of two fundamental principles of justice which would\, in turn\, guarantee a just and morally acceptable society. The first principle guarantees the right of each person to have the most extensive basic liberty compatible with the liberty of others. The second principle states that social and economic positions are to be (a) to everyone’s advantage and (b) open to all. \nA key problem for Rawls is to show how such principles would be universally adopted\, and here the work borders on general ethical issues. He introduces a theoretical “veil of ignorance” in which all the “players” in the social game would be placed in a situation which is called the “original position.” Having only a general knowledge about the facts of “life and society\,” each player is to make a “rationally prudential choice” concerning the kind of social institution they would enter into contract with. By denying the players any specific information about themselves it forces them to adopt a generalized point of view that bears a strong resemblance to the moral point of view. “Moral conclusions can be reached without abandoning the prudential standpoint and positing a moral outlook merely by pursuing one’s own prudential reasoning under certain procedural bargaining and knowledge constraints.”

DESCRIPTION:NOTE: earlier start time as this can be a dining event. Imagine fine french fries and deep fried chocolate bars on paper plates and you get the idea. Seriously\, there are also some very delicious (even healthy) options\, you just have to look for them. And this is the only time of the year when you can legally have a beer in a Saskatoon park outside of a beer garden. And live bands all day every day-for free! \nWE will be towards the back of the event\, as far away from the stage as possible(quieter). We will try to get the picnic tables backing the Bessborough Gardens if possible. Bring your lawn chair\, blanket or whatever you prefer to park your derriere on.

DESCRIPTION:University of Chicago philosopher and legal scholar\, Brian Leiter\, recently published an argument against allowing a special status for religious claims of conscience\, under the title of Why Tolerate Religion? He discusses the ideas of toleration and respect for others’ beliefs and whether these can support special claims for religious beliefs. Our resident Philosophy lecturer\, George Williamson\, will walk the group through the argument of the book. \n  \nPlease note: our monthly CFI Saskatoon Meetups are free to attend. You are not required to order any food or drink. If you do order something\, please remember to tip the waitress because they have a lot to keep track of with our group\, and they work around our table arrangements and presentation equipment.
