SUMMARY:2014 Darwin Day Celebration!
DESCRIPTION:February 12th is the birthday of Charles Darwin\, and “Darwin Day” is a global celebration of science and reason. This will be the 6th celebration in Saskatoon and the 4th year that the Saskatchewan Minister of Education has recognised February 12 as Darwin Day in Saskatchewan! \nThe University of Saskatchewan Freethought Alliance\, Saskatoon Skeptics and Centre for Inquiry Saskatchewan are proud to host the annual Darwin Day celebration in Saskatoon on February 12 at 7pm. \nCome and help us celebrate Darwin’s 205th birthday with a presentation followed by a discussion. Our speaker this year is U of S Dept of Anatomy and Cell Biology Professor Julia Boughner: \nSurvival of the…Happiest? The evolutionary use of happiness\, Darwin-style \nHuman culture is arguably as important as human biology for our species’ survival and success. In an age when a lot of us have more resources than our ancestors ever did\, many of us still find it difficult if not impossible to be happy. Based on Darwin’s own suggestion that “the vigorous\, the healthy\, and the happy survive and multiply” this talk explores the evolutionary benefits of happiness in the 21st century. \nBirthday cake and coffee will be available in the foyer following the event. SUMMARY:Annual General Meeting (Saskatoon)
DESCRIPTION:This will be our 5th Annual General Meeting (AGM) at which we’ll review 2013 and get feedback from members on future plans. We’ll also be welcoming the 2014 council members who will be elected prior to the meeting. \nHere are some of the topics of discussion\, especially useful for those who cannot attend – anything you’d like to add? \nWe are always looking for new ideas for regular meetup topics and for special events. With limited resources on council\, we aren’t able to take on all the good ideas\, but we offer support for initiatives that members want to lead. Tell us your ideas and let us know if your willing to spearhead something! \nDarwin Day is coming up (Feb 12) and this will be the 6th year in Saskatoon. We need volunteers for the event committee to help prepare for and execute the event. Let us know if you’re available for this or future events. A major task is putting up posters and then we need a few people for set-up\, greeting\, and clean-up. Also let us know if you’re interested in creating a poster for this or a future event. \nWe have an account with Kiva\, which provides microloans to lower income entrepreneurs. You are welcome to add to the fund at any time. As money is paid back\, we re-lend it to different people. At our December meetup\, we received $125 to add to the Kiva fund – yeah! \nWe are Partners for Life with Canadian Blood Services and we’ve pledged 30 donations for 2014. If you can donate blood\, tell them you’re part of our group with the partner number SASK010719. In the past we have done one group donation on the first Thursday in May for the Day of Reason\, but the turnout was very poor the last 2 years. Do you have an idea of how we can get more members to donate? Some members donate as often as they can – usually eligible every 56 days. \nWithout your support\, the Centre for Inquiry cannot continue our work. We encourage you to donate or join as a Friend of the Centre today. CFI is a nationally registered educational charity and all donations over $20 are eligible for a tax receipt. When donating online\, you can add a comment that you would like the funds to remain in Saskatchewan\, if you wish. We are currently collecting funds for local advertising. Let Brandon know if you are unable to bring a gift. \nDonations to Kiva: We have had a Kiva loans fund for a few years. Kiva is a program for providing funds for micro-loans – mostly to people in developing countries. We currently have $360.12 and have helped fund loans for 72 different entrepreneurs. Our number of loans and dollar amount of loans count toward the Atheists\, Agnostics\, Skeptics\, Freethinkers\, Secular Humanists and the Non-Religious team. DESCRIPTION:For this month’s meet up\, we have a presentation by Paul Hodgson\, spokesperson for the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization\, located at the University of Saskatchewan. \nThe title of Paul’s talk will be \nEmerging infectious diseases: Real world ‘Contagion’ or media hype? \nThe ‘Contagion’ in the title refers to the recent movie\, starring Jude Law and Kate Winslet. As it happens\, the film was inspired by events such as the SARS crisis and attempts an accurate depiction of the outbreak\, spread and attempts to control a new contagious disease. Thus\, it might make good homework to watch the film before the meetup.

DESCRIPTION:John Rawls’s A Theory of Justice was one of the most important and controversial books in philosophy of the second half of the Twentieth Century. \n \n \nFor this month’s meet up\, we are hosting a talk / discussion on Rawls’s theory\, given to us by Will Buschert\, of the UofS Philosophy and Political Science departments. \nRawls’s theory of justice revolves around the adaptation of two fundamental principles of justice which would\, in turn\, guarantee a just and morally acceptable society. The first principle guarantees the right of each person to have the most extensive basic liberty compatible with the liberty of others. The second principle states that social and economic positions are to be (a) to everyone’s advantage and (b) open to all. \nA key problem for Rawls is to show how such principles would be universally adopted\, and here the work borders on general ethical issues. He introduces a theoretical “veil of ignorance” in which all the “players” in the social game would be placed in a situation which is called the “original position.” Having only a general knowledge about the facts of “life and society\,” each player is to make a “rationally prudential choice” concerning the kind of social institution they would enter into contract with. By denying the players any specific information about themselves it forces them to adopt a generalized point of view that bears a strong resemblance to the moral point of view. “Moral conclusions can be reached without abandoning the prudential standpoint and positing a moral outlook merely by pursuing one’s own prudential reasoning under certain procedural bargaining and knowledge constraints.”

Seriously\, there are also some very delicious (even healthy) options\, you just have to look for them. And this is the only time of the year when you can legally have a beer in a Saskatoon park outside of a beer garden. And live bands all day every day-for free! \nWE will be towards the back of the event\, as far away from the stage as possible(quieter). We will try to get the picnic tables backing the Bessborough Gardens if possible. Bring your lawn chair\, blanket or whatever you prefer to park your derriere on.

DESCRIPTION:University of Chicago philosopher and legal scholar\, Brian Leiter\, recently published an argument against allowing a special status for religious claims of conscience\, under the title of Why Tolerate Religion? He discusses the ideas of toleration and respect for others’ beliefs and whether these can support special claims for religious beliefs. Our resident Philosophy lecturer\, George Williamson\, will walk the group through the argument of the book. \n  \nPlease note: our monthly CFI Saskatoon Meetups are free to attend. You are not required to order any food or drink. If you do order something\, please remember to tip the waitress because they have a lot to keep track of with our group\, and they work around our table arrangements and presentation equipment.
