DESCRIPTION:February 12th is the birthday of Charles Darwin\, and “Darwin Day” is a global celebration of science and reason. This will be the 8th celebration in Saskatoon and the 6th year that the Saskatchewan Minister of Education has recognized February 12 as Darwin Day in Saskatchewan! \nThe Saskatoon Skeptics and Centre for Inquiry Saskatoon are proud to host the annual Darwin Day celebration in Saskatoon on February 13 at 1pm. Come and celebrate Darwin’s 207th birthday with 2 presentations followed by discussions\, cake and coffee. \nOur first speaker this year is Dr. Jeffrey Lane (pictured below)\, Assistant Professor\, Department of Biology\, University of Saskatchewan. Dr. Lane’s lab combines theory and techniques from ecology\, evolutionary biology\, quantitative genetics and physiology to better understand adaptation of populations to their natural environments. They primarily work with wild mammal systems that have been studied for multiple decades. Dr. Lane will be speaking about evolutionary responses to climate change. \n \nOur second speaker this year is Dr. Ryan McKellar (pictured below)\, Research Scientist\, Curator of Palaeontology\, Royal Saskatchewan Museum. Dr. McKellar’s current research is focused primarily on amber inclusions and composition. His presentation is entitled Evolution through the eyes of a palaeontologist\, in which we will explore the deep-time component of evolution\, using case studies drawn from trilobites\, as well as fossil insects preserved in amber. The fossil records of these groups provide excellent examples of diversification and extinction on a global scale. They also provide an opportunity to observe evolutionary patterns across millions of years. Darwin’s work has had a lasting impact on how palaeontologists view fossils as a source of data. DESCRIPTION:Our local member Hashim will be discussing his experience growing up in Iraq and being raised in Islam. Hashim became an ex-Muslim in early 2013 because of underage marriage in Islam. Hashim belonged to the Sunni branch of Islam. He lived in New Baghdad district in Baghdad then moved to Hīt city in Al-Anbar. He arrived in Canada in June 2010. \nHashim will answer our questions\, so post below with what you want to know about Islam and his experience (general or very specific questions are fine). DESCRIPTION:PHIL 398 Philosophy in Education: An Introduction to Philosophy for Children was the pilot course which introduced philosophy for children to U of S undergraduate students and a grade five/six class at Hugh Cairns VC School in the winter term of 2013. \nPhilosophy for Children (P4C) introduces children to philosophy through thought experiments\, reasoning games\, and children’s literature. The Department of Philosophy at the University of Saskatchewan aims to advance P4C in the Saskatoon Public School Division through a new experiential learning course\, Phil 267 Philosophy in Education: an Introduction to Philosophy for Children. DESCRIPTION:This will be our 5th Annual General Meeting (AGM) at which we’ll review 2013 and get feedback from members on future plans. We’ll also be welcoming the 2014 council members who will be elected prior to the meeting. \nHere are some of the topics of discussion\, especially useful for those who cannot attend – anything you’d like to add? \nWe are always looking for new ideas for regular meetup topics and for special events. With limited resources on council\, we aren’t able to take on all the good ideas\, but we offer support for initiatives that members want to lead. Tell us your ideas and let us know if your willing to spearhead something! \nDarwin Day is coming up (Feb 12) and this will be the 6th year in Saskatoon. We need volunteers for the event committee to help prepare for and execute the event. Let us know if you’re available for this or future events. A major task is putting up posters and then we need a few people for set-up\, greeting\, and clean-up. Also let us know if you’re interested in creating a poster for this or a future event. \nWe have an account with Kiva\, which provides microloans to lower income entrepreneurs. You are welcome to add to the fund at any time. As money is paid back\, we re-lend it to different people. At our December meetup\, we received $125 to add to the Kiva fund – yeah! \nWe are Partners for Life with Canadian Blood Services and we’ve pledged 30 donations for 2014. If you can donate blood\, tell them you’re part of our group with the partner number SASK010719. In the past we have done one group donation on the first Thursday in May for the Day of Reason\, but the turnout was very poor the last 2 years. DESCRIPTION:For this month’s meet up\, we have a presentation by Paul Hodgson\, spokesperson for the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization\, located at the University of Saskatchewan. \nThe title of Paul’s talk will be \nEmerging infectious diseases: Real world ‘Contagion’ or media hype? \nThe ‘Contagion’ in the title refers to the recent movie\, starring Jude Law and Kate Winslet. As it happens\, the film was inspired by events such as the SARS crisis and attempts an accurate depiction of the outbreak\, spread and attempts to control a new contagious disease. Thus\, it might make good homework to watch the film before the meetup.

SUMMARY:John Rawls's Theory of Justice (Saskatoon)
DESCRIPTION:John Rawls’s A Theory of Justice was one of the most important and controversial books in philosophy of the second half of the Twentieth Century. \n \n \nFor this month’s meet up\, we are hosting a talk / discussion on Rawls’s theory\, given to us by Will Buschert\, of the UofS Philosophy and Political Science departments. \nRawls’s theory of justice revolves around the adaptation of two fundamental principles of justice which would\, in turn\, guarantee a just and morally acceptable society. The first principle guarantees the right of each person to have the most extensive basic liberty compatible with the liberty of others. The second principle states that social and economic positions are to be (a) to everyone’s advantage and (b) open to all. \nA key problem for Rawls is to show how such principles would be universally adopted\, and here the work borders on general ethical issues. DESCRIPTION:John Rawls’s A Theory of Justice was one of the most important and controversial books in philosophy of the second half of the Twentieth Century. \n \n \nFor this month’s meet up\, we are hosting a talk / discussion on Rawls’s theory\, given to us by Will Buschert\, of the UofS Philosophy and Political Science departments. \nRawls’s theory of justice revolves around the adaptation of two fundamental principles of justice which would\, in turn\, guarantee a just and morally acceptable society. The first principle guarantees the right of each person to have the most extensive basic liberty compatible with the liberty of others. The second principle states that social and economic positions are to be (a) to everyone’s advantage and (b) open to all. \nA key problem for Rawls is to show how such principles would be universally adopted\, and here the work borders on general ethical issues. We will try to get the picnic tables backing the Bessborough Gardens if possible. Bring your lawn chair\, blanket or whatever you prefer to park your derriere on.

He discusses the ideas of toleration and respect for others’ beliefs and whether these can support special claims for religious beliefs. Our resident Philosophy lecturer\, George Williamson\, will walk the group through the argument of the book. \n  \nPlease note: our monthly CFI Saskatoon Meetups are free to attend. You are not required to order any food or drink.
