SUMMARY:Okanagan - Documentary screening: We Were Children
DESCRIPTION:  \nScreening of the 2012 documentary\, We Were Children\, about the residential school system in Canada. \nIn collaboration with Interdisciplinary Studies at Okanagan College. \nThis event is free. Room B112. \n“In this feature film\, the profound impact of the Canadian government’s residential school system is conveyed through the eyes of two children who were forced to face hardships beyond their years. As young children\, Lyna and Glen were taken from their homes and placed in church-run boarding schools\, where they suffered years of physical\, sexual and emotional abuse\, the effects of which persist in their adult lives. We Were Children gives voice to a national tragedy and demonstrates the incredible resilience of the human spirit.” \nhttp://www.nfb.ca/film/we_were_children/trailer/we_were_children_trailer \nWe are pleased to announce that we have lined up a great panel to answer your questions after the screening of this documentary. Alma Marten\, who is a survivor of the residential schools will be joining us\, along with William Cohen\, professor of Indigenous Studies at Okanagan College\, and Anthony Isaac\, Aboriginal Access and Services Coordinator at Okanagan College.

SUMMARY:Okanagan - Where to Draw the Line: Challenges to Free Speech from Maurice Duplessis to Charlie Hebdo
DESCRIPTION:  \nThis is a collaborative event with the Okanagan Jewish Community Centre. \nIf possible\, please leave the small OJCC parking lot for people who might have difficulty parking further away and walking. There is on-street parking on Union Rd and I was told that North Glenmore Elementary\, across Snowsell St\, doesn’t mind people using their parking lot if they don’t have an event on. \nDr Andrew Irvine will be speaking about the importance of free speech in Canada and other Western democracies. His talk will review the current state of Canadian law with regard to free speech and other fundamental democratic freedoms and will discuss several landmark Supreme Court of Canada cases. \nAndrew Irvine teaches at the University of British Columbia. He holds a PhD in philosophy from Sydney University and is Head of Economics\, Philosophy and Political Science at UBC Okanagan. He is a past vice-chair of the UBC Board of Governors\, a past president of the British Columbia Civil Liberties Association\, and a member of the board of directors of the Society for Academic Freedom and Scholarship. He has held visiting positions at several Canadian and American universities and has been recognized as one of British Columbia’s most influential public intellectuals. \nDr Irvine is a renowned expert on Bertrand Russell. He has also published and lectured on topics in the philosophy of mathematics\, the history and philosophy of logic\, and the philosophy of law. He is an advocate of traditional democratic civil liberties\, and has argued in favour of free speech rights\, both for political reasons\, and in the context of defending academic freedom. He’s even written a play\, “Socrates on Trial”! \nhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_David_Irvine\nhttp://phil.ok.ubc.ca/faculty/irvine.html \nTime to be determined.

SUMMARY:Okanagan - After the dinosaurs: Extraordinary rates of erosion and how they created the Canadian landscape
DESCRIPTION:  \nCFI Okanagan is collaborating with the Okanagan Jewish Community Centre for this event. \nThis presentation marks a departure from Dr Robert Young’s usual work in that it addresses processes and time\nspans much larger than his Ice Age studies. It is important because it addresses the mechanisms and timing of processes responsible for leaving Canada the way we see it today. The journey is surprising and the inferences enormous\, and of interest to anyone who wishes to understand how this part of the natural world acts. \nDr Young became attracted to an academic life after being bitten by a bug called “Earth Surface Processes”. Having completed his B.Sc. and M.Sc. at the University of Alberta\, and a Ph.D. at the University of Calgary\, he has ended up at UBC’s Okanagan campus. Throughout his academic career\, Dr. Young has worked on a number interesting projects\, collaborating with Ice Age Palaeontologists. \nThis event is free.

SUMMARY:Okanagan - Kids for Inquiry: The Hour of Code
DESCRIPTION:“Last year\, [code.org] unveiled the Hour of Code: a grassroots campaign to recruit ten million students to try their hand at computer science — to break stereotypes and to remove the veil of mystery that surrounds the field. The campaign blew past its goal in days and has now reached 44 million students worldwide. \nFor this year’s Computer Science Education Week (December 8 – 14)\, we want the Hour of Code to reach a cumulative 100 million students\, worldwide.” \nYou are invited to join KFI and be part of this fantastic event! \nThe kids will be working on this tutorial: \nhttp://code.org/frozen \nHelping them will be Danielle Tilley\, who has worked in the computer programming industry for over 20 years\, and has been a Software Engineer with Disney’s Club Penguin for the past 3 years. \nThis event is primarily geared towards 7-12 year olds\, but younger and older are welcome. Non-readers will need help from parents. \nhttp://code.org/ \nhttp://www.facebook.com/Code.org

SUMMARY:Okanagan - Silence of the Labs
DESCRIPTION:Screening of the CBC documentary\, Silence of the Labs. \nThis is a collaborative effort between CFI Okanagan and Evidence for Democracy. http://evidencefordemocracy.ca/ \n“In recent years\, federal funding for science has decreased drastically. Because of these cutbacks\, many federal research programs have been scaled back or shut down completely\, including important programs that monitor air quality and ocean contaminants. This lack of monitoring and collection of crucial information prevents us from understanding our world and adapting to it when it changes. It also creates a gap in evidence that will impact public policy decisions for many years to come. This research is essential for protecting our health\, safety and the environment. \nThe CBC documentary Silence of the Labs investigates this changing landscape of public funding for scientific research and its relationship to public policy. The documentary highlights perspectives from the scientific community and the impact of government research funding decisions on all Canadians. \nThis is a must see documentary that raises important issues about public-interest science and the state of our democracy.” \nhttp://www.pipsc.ca/portal/page/portal/website/issues/science/vanishingscience \nhttp://www.cbc.ca/fifth/blog/federal-programs-and-research-facilities-that-have-been-shut-down-or-had-th \nJoin CFI and Evidence for Democracy in the boardroom at the Rotary Centre to see this documentary. \nFree. Donations will be gratefully accepted. \nThere will be time for discussion afterwards.

SUMMARY:Okanagan - Penticton Skeptics in the Pub
DESCRIPTION:CFI Okanagan helps support a “Skeptics in the Pub” group in Penticton. This is a message from their organizer\, Angela: \nSkeptics in the Pub is a fun and friendly casual social event that welcomes all local science enthusiasts who value critical thinking\, reason\, and skepticism. If you agree that\, as Carl Sagan said\, “Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence”\, then join us for conversation\, drinks\, and food in a friendly atmosphere. (The gathering will be upstairs in the boardroom at the Barley Mill.) \nI’m really looking forward to meeting many of you and we can discuss how we go forward\, if we want a regular monthly meeting night\, to try different pubs and perhaps other events. \nMonday September 22nd is the Fall Equinox\, members of RASC Okanagan (http://www.ocrasc.ca/) will be hosting the public atop Munson Mountain to observe the sunset. The ‘Pen Henge’ stones mark where the sun sets on Solstices and Equinoxes\, very cool! 5.30 – 6.30 pm with sunset about 6.20pm. Everyone welcome\, bring a jacket\, it can be windy up there 🙂 \nhttp://www.pentictonwesternnews.com/community/130220358.html

SUMMARY:Okanagan - KFI End of Summer Special: Remote Controller!
DESCRIPTION:  \nOne of the wonderful things about science is the cool gadgets it enables people to make. And some of those cool gadgets are toys! 🙂 \nIf you have a remote controlled toy — puppy\, car\, spider\, helicopter\, whatever — bring it out to the park and play with other KFI kids! (If you don’t have one\, you’re very welcome to come and watch.) \nBring something (such as different sized boxes\, ramps\, pool noodles\, bean bags\, hula hoops — anything to navigate over\, under\, around or through) to help create obstacle courses for the RC vehicles. \nKids: This activity can count towards your RCer patch on DIY.org:https://diy.org/skills/rcer \nParents: Remember to bring a camera to record your kid’s RCing to upload to the DIY.org website. \nAfter we’re done with the RC toys\, the kids can play at the water park (weather permitting\, of course)\, so bring a swim suit and towel. \nWe will gather on the path near the basketball court on the east side of the park. If you drive\, you will want to park in the lot on Franklyn Road. The park will be busy because there’s a City event going on at the waterpark.

SUMMARY:Okanagan - Field Trip to Okanagan Observatory
DESCRIPTION:  \nUpdate: Looks like the weather will cooperate\, so we are good to go! See you there! \nThis event is for both adults and kids who can keep their eyes open at that time of night! (We’ve organized it during the summer\, so it’s not really cold and it’s not on a school night.) \nPlease come out and join the Okanagan Centre chapter of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada at the Okanagan Observatory for a evening of stargazing. They’re opening the observatory\, especially for us — so if you can bring a donation for them\, that would be lovely and much appreciated\, I’m sure. \nThere should be nice\, dark skies\, enabling us to see Mars and Saturn\, as well as star clusters\, galaxies\, super nova remnants and what our Sun will look like in 5 billion years…. so long as the weather cooperates! \nIMPORTANT: If the weather is dicey on the 27th\, please check Facebook\, or Meetup\, or the CFI Canada website for confirmation that the event is happening before heading out to the observatory. \nThere’s a map to the observatory here: http://www.okanaganobservatory.ca/location.html \nCFI Okanagan volunteer\, Ryan Gerber\, will be your host for this event. Please\, don’t be shy\, and introduce yourself if you haven’t met! 🙂

SUMMARY:Okanagan - Kids for Inquiry Summer Special: The Bug Guys (and Reptiles too)!
DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin CFI Okanagan’s Kids for Inquiry and The Bug Guys for a special summer event! We will learn all about some amazing bugs and reptiles! You will also have an opportunity after the presentation to meet some of the animals up close and personal! Are you brave enough to touch a ball python? Or what about holding Tina the bearded dragon? \nSpace is very limited\, so we highly recommend getting tickets in advance. Tickets are free\, with a suggested $5 donation per child. If there is space\, tickets will also be available at the door. RSVPs on Facebook and Meetup do not guarantee a ticket. Please get tickets at Eventbrite: \nwww.kfibugguys.eventbrite.ca \nYour donations help to cover our costs and are very much appreciated! \n“The Bug Guys” is a small non-profit organization committed to educating young people and people young at heart about the world’s most misunderstood creatures; insects\, arachnids and of course reptiles. Stuart Brown (The Bug Guy) has always had a love for almost anything creepy crawly and could never understand why so many people hate them until he realized it was simply because people never really got to know them properly\, and so with each presentation a few more kids and adults learn to love some of the most “unlovable” critters as much as Stuart does. \nIn the presentation you will meet some of Stuart’s private collection and pets and enjoy hands on experience with some of his very friendly lizards and snakes. You will learn about each species relationship with other animals in its family\, the natural history and behavior of the species and their role in the pet trade\, as well as the care of the animals and whether they make good pets or not. The main goal of every presentation is put myths about these wonderful animals to rest and hopefully putting aside a few phobias so the animals can be appreciated for what they truly are; nothing short of amazing! \nAfter we’ve said goodbye to Stuart and the animals\, please join Kids for Inquiry outside for a family picnic (bring your own food!). \nTo keep up with future Kids for Inquiry events\, please join our Meetup group: http://www.meetup.com/Kids-for-Inquiry-Okanagan/

SUMMARY:Okanagan - Kids for Inquiry: Chemist
DESCRIPTION:Chemistry is the driving force inside batteries and they can be made out of a variety of different ingredients. At this KFI gathering\, the kids will be making batteries out of pennies! \nWe will have plenty of pennies\, but if you have any pennies lying around\, please do bring them along and put them to good use. 🙂 \nCan you make a battery that will light an LED? Does it make a difference how many pennies you use? Why? Test your battery and see if it can power other items you bring from home. (Bring small things that take one or two AA batteries and let’s test them out!) \nThis project can count towards the Chemist patch on DIY.org:https://diy.org/skills/chemist/challenges/360/light-an-led-with-a-homemade-battery \nYounger kids will definitely need help with this project\, so parents should stay to help. Older kids may be dropped off; please sign them in and leave a phone number so you can be contacted. Thanks! \nPlease RSVP on Meetup: \nhttp://www.meetup.com/Kids-for-Inquiry-Okanagan/events/181285292/ \n(That list of RSVPs will be taken as the definitive list\, not the Facebook RSVPs.) \nThis event is free\, but donations to cover costs are very welcome. 🙂

SUMMARY:Okanagan - Kids for Inquiry: Ornithologist
DESCRIPTION:  \nI know it’s 9am on a Sunday morning! But the birds will be busy at that time of day\, so it’s a good time to go watch them. \nWe will meet at the entrance to the Rotary Marsh Bird Sanctuary on Sunset Drive\, downtown Kelowna. We will be joined by experts from the Central Okanagan Naturalists Club and the Young Naturalists to look for birds and try to identify some of them. Kids should bring cameras and/or binoculars\, if they have them. Sketch books might be nice for kids who like to draw. \nThis event is designed for kids between 6 and 12 years old. Parents should stay with younger children. Older children may be dropped off\, but parents are welcome to stay. \nAt 10am\, we will walk over the the Rotary Centre to dissect owl pellets! Can you find evidence of what owls eat by investigating one of their regurgitated pellets? \nKids need to bring rubber gloves and tweezers\, paper/notebooks and pencils. Magnifying glasses would be great too! If they bring plain paper and they have a camera\, they can take nice photos of the bones they find in the pellets. \nIf the kids would like\, these activities can contribute towards the Ornithologist patch at DIY.org: \nhttp://diy.org/skills/ornithologist \nYou can find out more about KFI and DIY.org at our website:http://cfiokanagan.ca/kids-for-inquiry.html \nThis event is free\, but a donation would be very much appreciated to cover the cost of the room rental. \nPlease RSVP at the event page on Facebook.
