SUMMARY:Okanagan - How Does The Creative Process Work?
DESCRIPTION:  \nHow do we come up with new ideas? Dr Liane Gabora will introduce a theory of creativity which need not involve multiple distinct candidate ideas\, or selection. According to the honing theory of creativity\, (1) Creative individuals reshape issues or ideas that are ill-formed by considering them from different perspectives or contexts\, (2) Intuition has a scientific explanation\, and (3) Creative outputs result from a reorganization of an individual’s view of the world. There is an interplay of the elements of a body of knowledge to solve problems\, to reduce dissonance\, and/or to accommodate unexpected events. Occasionally\, one thought triggers another\, which triggers an avalanche of conceptual change resulting ininsight. She will present converging evidence for honing theory from neuroscience\, studies of analogy formation and creative style\, a mathematical theory of concepts\, and a computer model of cultural evolution. \nLiane Gabora is an Associate Professor of Psychology and creativity studies at the University of British Columbia. Her research\, which employs both experimental studies with humans and computational models\, focuses on creativity and how creative ideas evolve over time as different people adapt them to their own needs and tastes and put their own spin on them. She has over 150 scholarly publications\, has obtained over one million dollars in research grants\, and has given lectures worldwide. She is also a published fiction writer\, co-owns a small mobile app company\, and composes music for piano. \nThis free event is in collaboration with the Okanagan Jewish Community Centre.

DESCRIPTION:  \nAlthough 20% of people living in British Columbia do not believe in a “higher power”\, it is still generally considered taboo to admit that you do not believe in God. A 2011 UBC Vancouver study showed that atheists are distrusted just about as much as rapists. \nAt this event\, a panel of atheists will answer questions from the audience\, with the aim of increasing the understanding that believers have regarding non-believers. \nThis event is free and open to everyone — to people of faith and to those who are atheist or agnostic. \nRefreshments will be served. \nThis is in the new building — the Parkinson Activity/Seniors’ Centre\, next to the Parkinson Recreation Centre. We will have signs up.

DESCRIPTION:What\, me worry? Why should residents of the Okanagan be concerned about water supplies when they live next to a deep lake? Won’t climate change just mean nicer weather for Canadians? What does California’s drought mean for the Okanagan\, and what can we learn from it? What does the Okanagan Basin Water Board do to help? These and other questions will be explained and answered by Dr Anna Warwick Sears. \nAnna Warwick Sears is the Executive Director of the Okanagan Basin Water Board\, a collaborative local government water agency. Raised in B.C.\, she received a PhD in population biology at the University of California – Davis. Before returning to Canada in 2006\, Dr. Sears was Research Director of a watershed NGO in California. Dr. Sears is passionate about using science to solve real-world problems and building bridges with community stakeholders. She is active in Canadian grantmaking networks\, and serves on the Board of Governors of the B.C. Real Estate Foundation. In her free time\, Anna loves to explore the Okanagan valley\, and cook dinner for friends.

SUMMARY:Okanagan - What We Are Really and the NeoDarwinian Renaissance

Presentation starts at 7pm. \nLocal naturalist\, Jorma Jykkanen (BSc Zoology\, PDP)\, will be giving us a whirlwind tour from the science of the Big Bang\, through the origins of life\, and history of evolution to the present day. He recommends the following site for background on evolution: http://evolution.berkeley.edu/ \nJorma says he began his naturalist life as a boy in grade 6 studying stuffed birds behind a glass case at Rockwood Schooll\, Winnipeg. He went on into falconry and later went to university to study nature. He is a UBC trained Zoologist having studied evolution\, comparative anatomy of the vertebrates and entomology under Dr. Scudder at UBC. He also obtained a PDP from SFU with a focus in Environmental Education. Since then\, he has had various consulting and occasional teaching jobs\, and also worked as a salmon hatchery manager for a while. He did considerable consulting on pesticide toxicology over the years and was the co-discoverer of suspected carcinogen 1\,4-dioxane in Monsanto’s glyphosate herbicide Vision. He retired in Kelowna and has been active with the Central Okanagan Naturalists as an executive.

There is on-street parking on Union Rd and I was told that North Glenmore Elementary\, across Snowsell St\, doesn’t mind people using their parking lot if they don’t have an event on. \nDr Andrew Irvine will be speaking about the importance of free speech in Canada and other Western democracies. His talk will review the current state of Canadian law with regard to free speech and other fundamental democratic freedoms and will discuss several landmark Supreme Court of Canada cases. \nAndrew Irvine teaches at the University of British Columbia. He holds a PhD in philosophy from Sydney University and is Head of Economics\, Philosophy and Political Science at UBC Okanagan. He is a past vice-chair of the UBC Board of Governors\, a past president of the British Columbia Civil Liberties Association\, and a member of the board of directors of the Society for Academic Freedom and Scholarship. He has held visiting positions at several Canadian and American universities and has been recognized as one of British Columbia’s most influential public intellectuals. \nDr Irvine is a renowned expert on Bertrand Russell. He has also published and lectured on topics in the philosophy of mathematics\, the history and philosophy of logic\, and the philosophy of law. He is an advocate of traditional democratic civil liberties\, and has argued in favour of free speech rights\, both for political reasons\, and in the context of defending academic freedom. DESCRIPTION:  \nCFI Okanagan is collaborating with the Okanagan Jewish Community Centre for this event. \nThis presentation marks a departure from Dr Robert Young’s usual work in that it addresses processes and time\nspans much larger than his Ice Age studies. It is important because it addresses the mechanisms and timing of processes responsible for leaving Canada the way we see it today. The journey is surprising and the inferences enormous\, and of interest to anyone who wishes to understand how this part of the natural world acts. \nDr Young became attracted to an academic life after being bitten by a bug called “Earth Surface Processes”. Having completed his B.Sc. and M.Sc. at the University of Alberta\, and a Ph.D. at the University of Calgary\, he has ended up at UBC’s Okanagan campus. Throughout his academic career\, Dr. Young has worked on a number interesting projects\, collaborating with Ice Age Palaeontologists. \nThis event is free.

(Parents\, please stay with your kids for this one.) \nCome on a hike with geologist\, James Barr\, at Gallagher’s Canyon in Scenic Canyon Regional Park to see some interesting rock formations! \nJames is Professional Geoscientist who has worked in the mineral exploration and mine development industry for the past twelve years. He has worked all across Canada\, including the northern territories\, Mexico and Tanzania. He moved to Kelowna in April of this year with his family. James enjoys exploring all of the exciting features in the area with his two kids (4 and 2 yrs) and is looking forward to make some new discoveries with you. \nKids: Bring a rock or two from your collection and ask him to identify them for you! Maybe you can stump him. 😉 Don’t bring anything too precious\, and make sure they fit in your pocket! You’re going to need to carry them on your hike. 🙂 \nDon’t forget a water bottle and maybe a snack. And dress for the weather.
