The Revisionaries follows the Texas State Board of Education as they revise their textbook standards. Creationism is brought to the front in the science standards. Historical revisionism is brought to the front in the social studies standards. Join us as we screen this important film. Creationism expert and author of The Creationist Debate, Dr. Arthur McCalla, will host a Q&A session afterwards.
…I discovered a survey stating that half of the American public did not accept the theory of evolution and so I decided to focus my film on a Biology teacher and the lessons on evolution. Not long after I started following these classroom discussions, I learned about the political debate on the State Board of Education in Texas over how evolution would be taught in science and later how the concept of “separation between church and state” would be understood in social studies, among other controversial topics.

Answers to the most common questions:
We meet in a pub, usually the 3rd or 4th Sunday of the month. It’s completely informal, in a relaxed atmosphere. You can come late and/or leave early without rousing attention. There’s no set agenda. We get people who barely talk and people who rarely stop talking, so you can mostly listen, if that’s your thing.
CFI Halifax needs your help! There are several different ways you can help:
- We need a communications director. This person would be responsible for updating the website, Facebook, Twitter, and other old-and new-media outlets in a timely fashion.
- If you’d like to have a hand in planning or volunteering for CFI events, email Shawn at email@example.com. We have a Google group email through which we plan and discuss the direction of CFI Halifax.
- Support CFI by becoming a Friend of the Centre or making a donation.
- Show up for events. We need people active, informed, and involved.
- Follow and retweet us on Twitter at @CFINovaScotia. Like us on Facebook. Join us on Meetup. Tell your friends about us.
CFI Halifax’s goal is to support and grow the freethought community in Halifax and surrounding areas. Our interests vary, from unlikely alternative health claims to the latest scientific advancements, from government endorsement of religion to outlandish conspiracy theories, but we all value rationality and secularism.
We host a variety of events, and are always looking for other ways to connect with skeptics and critical thinkers. Skeptics in the Pub is an informal, social, monthly meeting at a bar. Public lectures have included philosophers, an astronomer, and James Randi, conjurer and skeptic extraordinaire. Fall 2013 marks the beginning of our film screenings.
